Join the Newport Transporter Bridge Project Team and Monmouthshire Railway Society for a guided walk tracing Newport’s historic railway network in the City Centre and Pillgwenlly, as part of Chepstow Walking Festival 2026! Starting at the City Centre bank of the River Usk, we trace the old tramroad routes, which evolved into railways in the 19th century. We walk part of the riverbank, then to before exploring the maze of lines and an ex-locomotive depot and works. Join us on a 7-mile (approx.)walk, starting at the fabulous Newport Wetlands, taking in the engineered landscape of the Gwent Levels and along the newly upgraded Wales Coast Path, on the Bridge’s East side. On this very day in history….During its 120 year life, the Newport Transporter Bridge has seen many acts of bravery. On the 12th September 1974 – 68 years to the day of its opening – PC’s Jeff Barley and Ray Lewis risked their lives rescuing a man clinging nearly 200 feet up from the East end of the Bridge’s boom! Both deservedly received the Queen’s Commendation for Brave Conduct

The 12th September marks the 120th anniversary of the official opening of our iconic Newport Transporter Bridge The footage below gives us a snapshot of what that day was like. As the first event ever to be filmed in it demonstrates that even then people realised its historic significance and that it needed to be preserved for future generations to see.
