Warning for online shoppers after spike in criminals gaining unauthorised access to retailer accounts

Report Fraud is urging online shoppers to stay alert for unusual activity on their accounts following a rise in criminals gaining access to buy expensive goods.

Recent reporting highlights Argos as a key trend in this activity. Report Fraud has seen a significant increase in cases mentioning the retailer, reflecting how criminals are targeting well-known brands. Argos is actively working with authorities and its customers to identify suspicious activity and strengthen safeguards.

Criminals are using login details obtained from data breaches to gain unauthorised access to retailer accounts. This is possible due to the practice of reusing the same password across multiple online accounts. Once they have control of the account, criminals will place online orders and then collect the good in-person at a physical store. In some instances, the goods are paid for using payment details not connected to the victim of the compromised account.

These fraudulent orders are frequently fulfilled through ‘click and collect’, allowing offenders to retrieve goods in person.

In May, Report Fraud received 652 reports which mention Argos, a 323 per cent increase compared to April, when 154 reports mentioning the retailer were made. Since the start of 2026, there have been 1,175 reports mentioning the retailer, with May seeing the highest number to date.

Argos has been contacting customers who may have been affected and continues to work closely with partners and shoppers to help protect accounts and prevent further incidents.

Detective Chief Inspector Steven Kettle, Head of Crime Services at Report Fraud, said:

“Report Fraud urges anyone with online retail accounts to remain vigilant and be alert to any unusual or suspicious activity.

“It is essential to take appropriate steps to protect your accounts by following Report Fraud’s guidance.

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, please report it to Report Fraud via reportfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.”

How can you protect yourself?
All shoppers with any retailer should take measures to protect their online account. Here is what you can do:

• Reset passwords: if you noticed any unauthorised activity on an online account, you should change your password immediately.

You should also do this for any accounts that use the same password. A good way to make sure your passwords are secure and strong is to combine 3 random words to create a unique password. You should opt for a passkey if you can.

• Enable 2SV: whenever available, protect your online accounts by enabling 2-step verification (2SV).

• Shopping online: if you decide to create an account for the store you’re buying from, don’t allow them to store your bank details for future purchases.

If you have been a victim of fraud, you should tell Report Fraud by reporting it on the website at reportfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. Or if you live in Scotland, call 101.

Appeal to trace witness

Detectives have released images of a witness they want to speak to in connection with the death of Conor Kinlan.

The man in the image is wearing blue-green trousers, a black jacket, a red and white cap and riding a light green mountain bike.

Conor’s body was found in the River Nene in Peterborough on 24 January and three men are due to stand trial charged with murder next month.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Stott, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “We’d like to speak to this man who we believe can help our enquiries.

“We recognise the images aren’t of the best quality but hope the man himself may see this and come forward, or someone might recognise the distinctive clothing.”

Anyone who saw the incident or has any information should contact us online via the Major Incident Public Portal or call 101 and quote Operation Adeo.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555111.

Kind Regards,

Two men have been ordered to pay £703 by Peterborough Magistrates Court after they were caught on CCTV dumping a mattress on a Peterborough street.

Both men were given the opportunity to pay a fixed penalty notice to discharge their liability for the offence, but failed to pay. As a consequence, the Safer Communities Service prosecuted both men for fly tipping.

Who, if not you?…
22nd May 2026
We want to know: have YOU ever called 999?

It might surprise you to learn that almost half of Brits have never called 999… But how many people can honestly say they’ve never witnessed a crime?

Unfortunately, many people feel conflicted when they witness a crime happening, and hope that someone else will be the one to report it, so they don’t have to get involved.

We’ve launched our latest campaign, , to remind people that reporting what you see could be the difference between someone getting help – or going without it.

If you, or someone you know, was the victim of crime, you would hope that someone would report it. So we’re reminding you, that if you see it, it’s your responsibility to report it.

Don’t assume someone else will tell us about it, just report it.

If everyone waits, no one reports.

Remember: if it’s an emergency, it’s 999. If a crime isn’t in progress, and no-one’s in immediate danger, report it online.

👉 Learn more and find out how to report safely and confidently on our website.

Thanks to worried restaurant staff

This week is Dementia Action Week, ran by the Alzheimer’s Society, and we’re sharing real examples from our call logs to highlight extra steps you can take to keep your loved ones safe.

Thank you to worried restaurant staff in St Ives, who called us one Saturday night recently with concerns about a man inside.

The elderly man was confused and said he was looking for his wife. He could give no other information other than his first name.

Officers visited the venue and checks revealed the man’s worried wife had been out looking for him.

We reunited the pair and took the time to speak to his wife about the Herbert Protocol – a scheme we support that can help find people with dementia if they go missing.

The scheme encourages family and friends to fill out an online form that will help police if a loved one goes missing by collating key pieces of information, such as a physical description, familiar places, health details and an up-to-date photo.

The woman planned to fill out the online form, and will be one of 475 people that have done so since it was launched.

For more information about the Herbert Protocol, or to fill out an online form for people who live in Cambridgeshire, visit our dedicated web page by clicking here.

Extra patrols tackle anti-social behaviour

We’re halfway through the quarter and your local neighbourhood team has been tackling the issues you’ve told us matter most in the northern sector of Peterborough.

These involve tackling anti-social behaviour in West Town, the Cresset Centre and at Peterborough City Hospital.

Work has included additional high visibility patrols in hotspot areas, tacking the problem of nuisance vehicles in Midland Road by issuing tickets, Other areas of focus have been Thorpe Lea Road, Holdich Street and Percival Street.

We have been working closely with the Cresset Centre and the hospital concerning ASB, including issuing banning orders to problem individuals and supporting staff by offering a visible presence. We have also contributed to a video aimed at supporting hospital staff, improving victim engagement and increasing positive outcomes.

I hope this gives you a brief snapshot of some of the work the team has been doing to address the issues that matter to you. You can find out more information on our website.

If you’d like officers to focus on another issue, please look out for details of quarterly priority community meetings. These will be promoted via eCops and also on the Policing Peterborough page.

Thank you for your support.

Kind regards,

Tim Goddard
Communications officer

**Important Information About the Bulky Waste Service**

Bretton Parish Council values the Bulky Waste Service as an essential resource for residents to dispose of large items responsibly. We appreciate your continued use of this service. To meet the rising demand, the Council is committed to improving efficiency for both residents and our crew.

Since the last session on Saturday, May 16, 2026, Peterborough City Council / Aragon has made slight adjustments to the timings at some sites, including the hours for the Aragon crew to empty their vehicles and take breaks. These changes will take effect starting with the bulky waste session scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

Please note that, in addition to the adjusted site timings, some items have been added to the prohibited list. These include the following:

General Household Waste: This should be disposed of in your black bins, as provided by Local Authorities.

Recycling Waste: This should be placed in your green bins, as provided by Local Authorities.

Garden Waste: This should go in your brown bins, which are chargeable and managed by Peterborough City Council.

To stay informed, please check the Parish Council website for the most current bulky waste poster and details.

You will also find a copy of the revised site timings and dates in the June 2026 edition of the Bretton Gazette, ensuring you have the latest information.
