Kawasaki Disease is a rare illness that mostly affects young children — but early recognition can make a big difference. ❤️

If a child has a fever lasting 5 days or more, it’s important to seek medical advice, even if other symptoms are mild or have come and gone.

Parents and carers may notice:

Red eyes (without discharge)

Red or cracked lips / changes in the mouth

Rash

Swollen or red hands and feet

Swollen lymph node in the neck

These signs may not all appear together, and some children — especially babies — may show fewer symptoms.

Our aim at Kawasaki Disease UK is to help families understand the signs early so children get the care they need.

This condition affects children — especially under 5 — and can cause long-term heart complications if not treated quickly.
Watch out for:
🔥 Fever lasting 5 days or more
👀 Red eyes (non-sticky)
👄 Red, cracked lips or strawberry tongue
👌 Swollen hands and feet
🔴 Rash
Irritability
Enlarged lymph node in the neck

Some children who had Kawasaki disease may develop calcium build-up in their coronary arteries later in life.

Kawasaki disease doesn’t always end when the fever is gone. For some patients, long-term changes can develop in the heart’s arteries — including calcification, where scar tissue becomes hardened with calcium.

These calcifications can appear years after the initial illness and may increase risks later in life.

The takeaway? Lifelong follow-up matters. Awareness, monitoring, and research are key to protecting heart health after KD. ❤️
