Thetford Road edible planters is looking great and there are lots of lettuce leaves that can be picked.

Unfortunately the Rocket has bolted (gone to seed) but the good news is Rocket flowers (and bolted rocket greens) are completely edible, adding a vibrant pop of color and a distinct peppery, mustardy kick to your dishes. They are best used raw as a delicate garnish or tossed whole into salads and grain bowls.

Here are three ways to use your flowering rocket:

1. Peppery Rocket Pesto

Instead of discarding bolted, flowering plants, you can easily turn the leaves and flowers into a vibrant, homemade pesto.

Ingredients:
100g (about 4 cups) bolted rocket leaves and flowers
50g (ΒΌ cup) sunflower seeds, pine nuts, or walnuts
2 cloves garlic,
peeledJuice and zest of 1 lemon
50ml (ΒΌ cup) extra virgin olive oil
ΒΎ tsp sea salt

Instructions:
Wash and thoroughly dry the rocket leaves and flowers.Add the rocket, seeds, garlic, lemon juice, lemon zest, and salt to a food processor or blending container.Pulse until the greens are very finely chopped.Slowly drizzle in the olive oil while blending until the pesto reaches a smooth consistency.Serve immediately over linguine, stir into soups, or spread on bruschetta!

2. Red, Green & Yellow Salad
Showcase the flowers by letting them play the role of both an ingredient and a colorful finishing herb.
Ingredients:
1 bell pepper,
finely sliced1 red onion,
cut into thin rings 2 handfuls of young rocket leaves
A generous handful of fresh rocket flowers and extra petals

Dressing:
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp white wine or apple cider vinegar
1 tsp Dijon mustard
Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:
Gently wash the rocket leaves and flowers and pat dry with a kitchen towel.Toss the sliced pepper, onion rings, rocket leaves, and most of the flowers into a large salad bowl.Whisk the oil, vinegar, and mustard together in a small bowl and season with salt and pepper.Pour the dressing over the salad, toss gently, and garnish with the remaining flowers right before serving.

3. Fairy Cakes with Rocket Flowers

For a beautifully delicate, savoury-meets-sweet presentation, fresh rocket blossoms make a great garnish for bakes.

Instructions:
Bake a standard batch of vanilla or lemon fairy cakes (cupcakes) using a basic creamed sponge mix.Let them cool entirely on a wire rack.

Top the cupcakes with your favorite icing (such as a simple lemon or vanilla buttercream).

Top each cake with a dainty rocket flower for an elegant, peppery-sweet bite.

The high street tiered planters have been planted for summer. With our Yellow and Red colour theme for 2026. We've gone for colourful annuals this time for impact.

Key plants are Bidens which are brilliant for pollinators and Lysimachia Aurea (creeping Jenny) which will spill over like Winnie the poohs favourite food Hunny.

The begonias will be stored overwinter and reused.

The fire station buckets have been planted using Ivy that was removed from the winter displays (from the high street) and red geraniums grown from plugs by volunteer Jenny B. We think they look magnificent.

Wherever possible it is our aim to reuse as many plants as possible from our displays whilst keeping the seasonal displays updated and relevant.

Wedge centre bed will very shortly be relocated to a brand new garden space.

Recently through grant funding we purchased a weather station. This is kindly being hosted at Brandon Heritage Centre

Weather plays an extremely important role in gardening, and Brandon's unique natural environment of sand and pine forests means our weather can be very different to the rest of our region. (The weather station at Santon Downham is often mentioned on the news)

It dictates when we can plant safely after the last frosts, which are usually much later than other places. We all know that the Brecks has a semi continental climate, our rainfall is so much lower. So now we will know exactly how much rain we get.

The new weather station will help us monitor so we can adapt our planting choices and watering rotas to our exact conditions. By planting the right plants, in the right place at the right time our plants will ultimately be more robust, naturally withstanding fungal or pest attacks, and grow healthy without excessive use of fertiliser. Saving on volunteers time and our resources.

Our thanks to Terry Hawkins - Web, Print, Design for updating our website to link to the weather station for everyone to use.

Bloom Wednesdays

A very busy day for the team.

First batch of summer plants planted at "The Wedge," in bed1. Bed 3 cleared ready for planting. The pansies planted in Brandon Chiropractic car park as plenty of life in them still.

There was a copious amount of watering on the high street and the team went home " blooming exhausted "

Peaches and nectarines are growing well along the flint wall at the wedge.
