A Message from National Highways

Transfer of responsibilities on the A1(M)
We are writing to inform you of an upcoming change in the management of the A1(M) in your local area. Currently, this route is managed and maintained under a Design, Build,
Finance, Operate (DBFO) concession. On 31st March 2026, the contract with the DBFO Company will come to an end.
From that date, the responsibility for the day-to-day
operation,maintenance, and
renewal of the route will transfer to National Highways. To effectively manage this
transition, we will be integrating the route into our regional approach.
From your perspective, there is unlikely to be any significant change. The duties currently performed by the DBFO Company will simply transfer to National Highways.
We may, in turn, contract out some activities, particularly works. This means that from 1st April 2026, National Highways will become your primary point of contact for items
such as incidents, litter, highway defects, abnormal loads, and roadspace booking. We will provide you with the relevant operational contact details closer to the transfer date to ensure a seamless transition.
If you have any questions regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact the National Highways team using the details below.

Yours sincerely,

Fly tipping

Earlier this year we had a number of items (rubbish) dumped next to the charity bins at the Memorial Centre. CCTV monitors the car park and the offender was reported to the authorities. The person has been served with a fixed penalty ticket which needs to be paid within 14 days or the matter will be upgraded to a court file to be heard at magistrates court.

Please do not leave any items in the car park. If they are charity or electrical items that do not fit in the appropriate bins, take them away with you

Asian hornet - this is an invasive species, a threat to our wildlife. Please report any sightings - info below:

🐝 Asian Yellow-Legged Hornet Confirmed in Huntingdonshire — Please Stay Alert 🐝
The Asian Yellow-Legged Hornet (Vespa velutina) has now been confirmed in Huntingdonshire for the first time. As members of the Huntingdonshire Beekeepers’ Association, we are asking residents to help by staying alert and reporting any possible sightings.
This invasive species poses a serious threat to honey bees and other pollinators, and early detection is essential to prevent it becoming established in our county.

🔎 What to look for
The Asian Yellow-Legged Hornet looks quite different from our native insects:
✅ Asian Yellow-Legged Hornet (YLH)
• Mostly dark brown or black body
• Single orange/yellow band on the abdomen when viewed from above
• Yellow tips on the legs (often described as “yellow socks”)
• Orange face when viewed from the front
• Slightly smaller than a European hornet
• At this time of year, queens are most likely to be seen feeding on nectar-rich flowers (until about mid-May). Workers later in the season may be seen hovering near bee hives or flowers, catching insects
⚠️ European Hornet (native species — please do not report unless unsure)
• A little larger than the Asian Yellow-Legged Hornet
• More yellow overall with reddish-brown markings
• Yellow abdomen with multiple brown bands
• A beneficial native insect and not a threat to bee populations in the same way – they are great pollinators
⚠️ Wasps (spring queens)
• At this time of year you are likely to see large queen wasps
• A bit smaller than an Asian Yellow-Legged Hornet
• Bright yellow and black striped bodies
• Early-season queens are searching for nesting sites (only worker wasps are attracted to food and drink but this is typically later in the summer

📸 What to do if you spot one
• ✅ Do not approach or disturb it
• ✅ If safe, take a photograph or short video
• ✅ Report immediately to the National Bee Unit (NBU) via:
o The Asian Hornet Watch app, or
o Online at: 👉 https://www.nationalbeeunit.com
Your report goes directly to local Bee Inspectors who can investigate quickly.
🚨 Please do not attempt to destroy nests yourself. Specialist teams handle this safely.
There are several clear identification posters available online — please share these alongside this message where possible.
Early reporting makes a huge difference — community awareness is our best defence in protecting local pollinators.
Thank you for helping protect Huntingdonshire’s bees and wildlife. 🐝🌼

A Message from CCC

Due to emergency carriageway defects the A1307 will be CLOSED between the hours of 09:30-19:00 on:

18.03.2026 westbound from Swavesey to Pathfinder Link Road, Huntingdon
19.03.2026 eastbound from Pathfinder Link Road to Swavesey

There will be two diversions in place. One that utilises the A14 at junction 24 (Swavesey) – A141 and one that utilises A141 – A1123 – A10 – A14 J33 for non-expressway traffic.

We are aware that currently the B1050 is closed in Willingham for planned works and utilises the A1307 as part of its diversion route. To ensure further delays are not encountered on this project works may be undertaken on the 18th under stop and go or an alternative diversion route being implemented for these two days being A1123 – B1049 – Rampton Road and vice versa. Whilst we understand this is not ideal it is important that these emergency works are carried out.

Emergency vehicles under blue lights will be allowed through the closure where it is safe to do so however because of specialist machinery on site this may not be possible at all times.

We apologise for any inconvenience these essential works may cause and appreciate your understanding.

Voters urged to register to vote before it’s too late

With only five weeks to go until the voter registration deadline for local elections on 7 May, anyone who wants to vote must make sure they are registered in time.

Research shows that some groups, including young people, students and those who have recently moved, are less likely to be registered than others. The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Monday 20 April. Voters can apply online at gov.uk/register-to-vote. It takes just five minutes.

Once registered, voters have a range of options – they can vote in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote on their behalf, known as a proxy vote.
Voters going to a polling station will need to show photo ID. To find out which ID you can use in the polling station, visit the Electoral Commission website.

Postal voting is available to anyone who will be away on holiday, has work commitments that prevent them from getting to a polling station, or simply finds it more convenient. Applying is quick and easy, ensuring everyone can take part in the democratic process.

Once registered, voters will receive a postal ballot pack ahead of the election with clear instructions on how to complete and return their vote.

Michelle Sacks, Electoral Registration Officer for Huntingdonshire District Council, said:
“Don’t lose your chance to have your say at elections in May. Local elections are an important opportunity to have your say on who represents you and makes decisions about issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Huntingdonshire.

“If you’re in doubt about whether you need to register to vote or have questions about how to apply for a postal or proxy vote, or free ID, go to the Electoral Commission’s website.”

Register to vote to take part in elections in the UK. Includes how to get on the electoral register and how to update your address on the register.
