The Dorothy Springer Trust

The Dorothy Springer Trust This is an aspiration that is all but impossible at the moment.

The Dorothy Springer Trust is working to advance the prospects of disabled people in Sierra Leone through education and vocational training, with a focus on Information, Communication and Technology (ICT). The key themes for our strategy in the next five years are:

- Sponsorship in education and training - Working with local organisations in Sierra Leone to select disabled people to undergo ICT t

raining and certification to an advanced level. (Partner organisations will provide the training).

- Operation of employment agency - Exploring the possibilities of setting up a centre that will support disabled people after they are trained, by acting as a niche agency for recruitment and the provision of ICT services to businesses and other organisations. We are convinced that this project will enable disabled people who have the potential to achieve a high level of competence and who complete the training to find regular employment in Sierra Leone—today and, increasingly so, in the future.

DST RECEIVES ASSISTIVE DEVICES on Friday 7th November, 2025

A New Dawn for Inclusive Education in Sierra Leone!

This marks a transformative milestone in our collective journey toward an inclusive Sierra Leone!

We are deeply honored to receive a generous donation of ASSISTIVE DEVICES from the Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation, in collaboration with the World Bank.

This incredible support will greatly enhance our capacity to empower persons with disabilities, learners, and individuals across communities; ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.

These devices are more than tools; they are gateways to independence, learning, and opportunity. They will enable individuals with various impairments/challenges to access digital resources, communication platforms, and educational technologies that promote equity and inclusion.

We extend heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry, Universal Access and the World Bank for their unwavering commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering inclusive development. Together, we are creating a future where technology serves everyone, regardless of ability.

Let’s continue to stand TOGETHER FOR AN INCLUSIVE SIERRA LEONE

It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Professor Dr. Gemma Calvert as the new Patron of the Dorothy Springer Trust (DST).

I have had the privilege of knowing Professor Calvert for many years, during which time she has been both a close friend and a steadfast supporter of DST’s mission in Sierra Leone. Her long-standing commitment, combined with her distinguished professional background, will bring invaluable strength to our organisation.

We are confident that, as Patron, Professor Calvert will help open new doors and create opportunities that will further advance our work in promoting inclusion education, empowerment, and equal access for persons with disabilities.

We warmly welcome Professor Calvert to the DST family and look forward to the positive impact her patronage will bring.

At the end of 2024 DST was commissioned by Liliane Fonds and One Family People to partner with other disability organisations to deliver the Programme for Inclusion and Empowerment (PIE) – a three-year programme aiming to improve the lives of children and young people with disabilities in Sierra Leone. PIE is a Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme focusing on multiple impact areas, including child support, capacity strengthening, lobbying and advocacy, education, health and economic empowerment.
DST is leading on inclusive education and is also involved in the delivery of the livelihood element. We have nearly completed the first semester of 2025. DST is working with around 200 children, piloting the Programme in five of the sixteen Sierra Leone districts. DST is assessing schools (pre-school, primary and junior secondary) to identify fifteen that will receive further support, including providing training for inclusive education champions and special educational needs teachers. Training will commence in the second semester. DST will also support parents of children and young people with disabilities to advocate collectively for their children’s rights and obtain support. A loan scheme will also assist parents with equipment and uniforms.
