Words from Kerry, Áine’s mum:

Since losing Áine, I often find myself replaying moments and thinking about what we wish we had known, asked, or understood sooner.

If I could give one piece of advice to parents, young women, or families around the combined pill, it would be this:

Please ask questions.

Ask about the risks, side effects, warning signs, and whether there are alternative options. If something is not clear, ask again. You should never feel embarrassed for wanting to understand your own health.

I would encourage families to have open conversations at home too, especially with young women who may feel unsure, worried, or afraid of sounding dramatic when something does not feel right.

I wish we had known more about the symptoms of a blood clot, the side effects that should never be ignored, and when to seek urgent medical help. Above all, I wish we had trusted our instincts and kept pushing for answers.

This is not about creating fear around contraception. It is about education, awareness, and informed choice.

I cannot change what happened to Áine, but through sharing her story, I hope we can help another family ask more questions, recognise symptoms sooner, or feel empowered to seek help.

We Need You.

More than 1,500 people support the work of the ARCS Foundation.

Yet many of our posts reach only a small proportion of those people.

Every like, comment, and share helps our posts travel further, reach new people, and start new conversations.

If you believe in safer contraceptive care, informed choice, and better awareness for women, don't scroll past.

Like it. Share it. Talk about it.

Because the more people we reach, the more lives we have the potential to impact.

Because silence doesn't create change.

Follower Appreciation Post 🌷

A huge thank you to Liv and Abi, two of Áine’s friends, who recently took on the Manchester 10k in support of the ARCS Foundation.

Through their incredible effort and generosity, they raised an amazing £2,500 for our cause!

Not only does this help us continue our work, but it also helps keep Áine’s memory and legacy alive through positive action and awareness.

Thank you both – we’re incredibly grateful and so proud of what you’ve achieved 🩷

We’re sure Liv and Abi would appreciate a like or share for their incredible effort 🥳🎉

Knowing your blood pressure is one of the simplest ways to understand your health.

High blood pressure often develops gradually and may not cause any obvious symptoms, which is why regular checks are so important.

Knowing your usual blood pressure can help you recognise when something has changed. For most people, a home blood pressure reading below 135/85 is generally considered healthy, but it's always important to discuss any concerns with a healthcare professional.

A simple check at home, in a pharmacy, or during a healthcare appointment can help you build a clearer picture of your health over time.

Position matters too!
Keeping your feet flat on the floor, your arm supported at heart level, and using the correct cuff size can help ensure a more accurate reading.

Monitoring your blood pressure is one of the simplest ways to take an active role in your healthcare, helping you make informed decisions and feel more confident in managing your health.

At just 21 years old, one of our followers suffered a bleed and blood clot on her brain after taking the combined contraceptive pill.

What initially appeared to be dehydration quickly became life-threatening. Doctors advised the family to prepare for the worst, as the clot and bleed had caused significant damage to her speech and memory.

Following four weeks in hospital, six months of blood-thinning treatment, speech rehabilitation, PTSD counselling, and a major seizure during her recovery, she thankfully survived.

Today, she still experiences some lasting effects, particularly when tired.

One part of her story that really stayed with us:

"My daughter did read all the leaflets, but no matter how much reading you do, it will still not stop this happening."

Thank you for sharing your experience and helping raise awareness.

If you've had a similar experience, your story matters too. We'd love to hear from you!

The UK government has announced a renewed Women’s Health Strategy for England, aimed at tackling what previous Health Secretary Wes Streeting described as “medical misogyny” within the NHS. The strategy focuses on improving how women are listened to, diagnosed, and treated across the healthcare system.

A couple of the points from the strategy that we find particularly positive include:

- A new “Women’s Voices Partnership” will bring together organisations representing women to help shape future NHS policy and healthcare decisions.
- Clinical pathways for menopause, heavy periods, and pelvic health conditions will be redesigned to speed up access to care.
- The government is investing £1 million into menstrual health education in schools and £1.5 million into a FemTech innovation fund.

The announcement follows ongoing criticism that women’s pain and symptoms are too often dismissed or misdiagnosed, particularly in reproductive health, menopause, and heart disease.

A lot of the work behind a foundation happens quietly in the background.
We’ve been spending time focusing on building strong foundations for long-term impact. These include:
• Creating clear financial procedures
• Developing a 12-month operational budget
• Establishing our equality & diversity policy
• Setting measurable objectives for the year ahead
Advocacy is more than visibility.
It’s accountability, structure, and creating systems that allow meaningful work to grow sustainably.
Our goal is to build this foundation with integrity, purpose, and transparency, establishing something meaningful that will outlive us and continue creating impact across the world for years to come
