Nearly half of Birmingham's children are growing up in poverty.

Following a visit to Birmingham, Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza has called for urgent action on what she described as the city's "Dickensian" levels of child poverty.

The scale of the challenge is stark, but for communities across Birmingham, this isn't news. It's the reality families, schools, youth workers, community organisations, and neighbourhood groups are dealing with every day.

Economic justice in Birmingham would mean every child has the opportunity to thrive. That means tackling poverty at its roots, from insecure work, low incomes, and poor housing, to unequal access to services, and a lack of investment in the neighbourhoods that need it most.

Impetus is seeking applications from non-profit organisations that:

- Seek to support young people (age 16-24) who are NEET and from disadvantaged backgrounds

- Deliver work-related skills (either vocational or essential)

- Aim for employment outcomes for those young people

The current grant round is open until Monday 15 June.

Our 2026 Skills grant round is officially open!

Last week, official statistics from the ONS revealed that more than one million young people in the UK are not in employment or full-time education (NEET). For young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the risk of becoming NEET is twice as high as their better off peers.

At Impetus we are determined to close this gap - which is why we are now looking to fund one or two new partner organisations supporting NEET young people into employment, by developing work-related skills.

What's on offer?

🔸 £100k in core, unrestricted funding for an initial period of one year (with potential for us to become a longer-term funder)
🔸Hands-on strategic support from our expert Investment Team
🔸 Access to our network of pro bono experts and peer learning forums
🔸 A platform to influence national policy through our sector coalitions

What are we looking for?

We are looking for UK-registered non-profits that:
✅Seek to support young people (age 16-24) who are NEET and from disadvantaged backgrounds
✅Deliver work-related skills (either vocational or essential)
✅Aim for employment outcomes for those young people
