ABOUT ME

Hello – my name is Sheila Kaur and I started Epilepsy UK in 2015. I was diagnosed with Primary Generalised Epilepsy at the age of 5 years. There is no known cause and it effects both sides of my brain.

INSIGHT

I am British by birth and of Indian ethnicity. Growing up I did not know anything much about Epilepsy. I only knew I had epileptic seizures. It was never really discussed by my family and I never told anyone about my health. From what I know – there was hardly (if not no) additional information provided by health professionals to support my parents or myself (outside of NHS services I.e. hospital appointments or GP services). Growing up I never really researched the condition or looked for any further information, until later after becoming a mother in my 20s. It is a shame that many people did not have or know about the additional support networks, that are widely available today. Epilepsy is generally a taboo subject in many cultures, until recently. Related conversations are hardly heard of; many sufferers may feel isolated, lonely and families may live in fear of the unknown. I know further learning, information, resources, events and support is required for better knowledge and understanding of the condition. More offline resources are vital.

AIM

Is to help all those people with any connection to Epilepsy nationwide. By supporting, raising awareness and educating. Reminding people, we all share experiences related to the same health condition. We are a community and no one should feel alone.

I’m writing a journal article on the psychosocial impact epilepsy has on us. I would love to have people share how their epilepsy impacts them so I can increase the data I collect. All data is anonymous.

LIGHT CYCLES EXPERIENCE
Embarking on any journey or experience one must be sure to reduce the chances of risks and to be safe. So as this immersive experience has lighting and visual effects I decided to contact the company.

Here's the response I received ...
ME - Is this display safe for those with Epilepsy ?
ANSWER - The event may contain strong lighting effects, of which some may flicker or strobe.

ME - So it may not be suitable ?
ANSWER - Yes, it may not be suitable since this will include strobe lights.

ME - Can this clearly be stated on all platforms ?
ANSWER -

For the first time in Birmingham, the immersive Light Cycles experience will take you on a path of light and sound that leads to the heart of nature.

THE CALMCARRY
As someone with Epilepsy, when i see new products i read whether they are safe and suitable to use. After seeing some posts about this product which is to relieve Anxiety or Restless Sleep episodes; i later decided to contact the company GlowCo if it was safe to use for those with Epilepsy.

Here's the response..
"Thank you for your inquiry. As a safety precaution, it is not advisable to use the CalmCarry device if you have epilepsy. The device emits vibrations, which may potentially trigger seizures in individuals with epilepsy.
We recommend consulting with your doctor or healthcare provider to determine if it is safe for you to use the CalmCarry device given your medical condition."
