Remembering Srebrenica

Remembering Srebrenica Remembering Srebrenica is the UK charitable initiative that promotes Srebrenica Memorial Day on 11th July and educates about the consequences of hate.

“…The greatest atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.”

In July 1995, Serbian forces, commanded by General Mladić and his paramilitary units, systematically and brutally massacred more than 8,000 Bosnian men and boys. Their bodies, many dismembered and mutilated, were piled in mass graves. Almost twenty years later, their remains are still being uncovered. The International Court of

Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) have both ruled that the mass ex*****on of Bosnian men and boys in Srebrenica constitutes as genocide. Describing the 'unimaginable savagery' endured by victims at the hands of Mladić's forces, Prosecutor Judge Riad said they were “truly scenes from hell, written on the darkest pages of human history”. The European Parliament has now declared 11th July as Srebrenica Memorial Day; an opportunity to remember the victims of the genocide, their suffering families, and to acknowledge that we can never again let such atrocities occur.

Our YouTube channel has our films from previous years, which share stories and testimonies from across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our theme for 2017 was “Breaking the Silence: Gender and Genocide”.

As well as remembering those who lost their lives, we must never forget that Srebrenica was the final act in a genocidal plan aimed at Bosnian Muslims. Among the victims of this plan were the 20,000 to 50,000 Bosniak women and girls – as young as 12 – who were subjected to sexual violence. We do not know the exact number of victims, because the majority of them have remained silent, through stigma, shame and fear.

The 2017 film features two women, Bakira Hasečić and ‘Mirsada,’ who were both subjected to horrific ordeals, but bravely speak out to prevent anything similar happening again.

Misogyny, hatred and violence against women and girls are not just problems during genocide or conflict, as can be seen in our communities every day. We must stand up to all forms of hatred and build safer, stronger and more cohesive societies.

In April 1992, while at home with her husband and two daughters, Bakira Hasečić answered a knock on her door. The local police chief, along with 15 other men entered her home. They placed the family on house arrest, repeatedly r***d Bakira and her eldest daughter and robbed them of their savings.

You can read Bakira’s story in and her work towards seeking justice for women victims, on our website: https://srebrenica.org.uk/survivor-stories/bakira-hasecic

Today is International Day of Innocent Child Victims of War.
During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, thousands of children were killed, and tens of thousands injured or displaced.

Learning the lessons of that war, of the consequences of hatred on innocent children, remains vital.

We have resources sharing children’s experiences of war suitable for schools on our website, at Srebrenica.org.uk/learn or via the link in our bio.
