An autistic child is 160 times more likely to die from drowning than a neurotypical child.

Elopement and drowning are the leading cause of death for an autistic individual.

I feel many people don’t take parents seriously when we say “my autistic child could die if we don’t have our eyes on them at all times”.

Some of us can’t even let go of their hand.

It is an indescribable, crippling, daily fear that a parent can feel when they have an autistic child that elopes and does not understand danger.

The fear is a reality for us.

We spend countless hours, days, weeks, months..even years..trying to stay ahead. Making sure we are updating locks, gps devices and covering any escape route we can see for ourselves.

We spend endless sleepless nights waiting for alarms to wake us up and checking video cameras regualrly.

There are many of us who have to navigate safety precautions…

Through toddlerhood…

Through childhood…

Maybe even adulthood…

Maybe…

FOREVER.

The statistics don’t lie.

49% of autistic children will elope, escape from their home or a safe environment.

91% of their deaths will be caused by drowning.

Has your autistic child ever eloped?

Water safety starts with knowledge.

Whenever you are around water:

❗Stop and think – take time to assess your surroundings. Look for the dangers and always research local signs and advice.

👥Stay together – stick with friends or family when around water. Swim at a lifeguarded venue.

Check the Water Safety Code and share it with others to keep your community safe: www.rlss.org.uk/the-water-safety-code
