DAY 3 Birmingham Jazz - Crossing Boundaries Festival Weekend 2026

The last day kept us all energised to the end with highly entertaining performances all round. Friends performed works of Langston Hughes over jazz standards giving it a whole new dimension and taught us all how to sing the rhythm and blues. Nicolas Meier World Group took us to Turkey, Egypt, Spain, Balkans and beyond and Clarvis/Noble played straight through a breaktaking set entirely composed of the themes from West Side Story.

Huge thanks to everyone who bought raffle tickets which raised over £250 for the charity, and thank you to our artist-in-residence Gina Southgate who donated one of her prints as an additional prize. Gina produced live paintings of all the acts who performed over the weekend and you'll see the fantastic results in some of the photos.

We're taking a one week break after the packed festival weekend and we'll be back with Birmingham Jazz - Howl Quartet on Friday 22nd May making their Birmingham Jazz debut

2 WEEKS TO GO UNTIL OUR FESTIVAL WEEKEND 8th-10th May

For 3 days in May we present a diverse programme of 9 bands in a mix of styles to suit every taste from Indian classical music to ambient music and many other global influences, including a rare chance to see the 5-piece Carnatic Song Band featuring Asaf Sirkis and a new commission for the Birmingham band Friends (whose members played with the great Andy Hamilton) to perform the poetry of the most celebrated black poet Langston Hughes with musical accompaniment.

In addition there will be an artist-in-residence Gina Southgate who will be painting each gig live in the room for the whole Festival. These can be admired as they take shape and will be available for sale afterwards!

So make sure you get booking for this festival as spaces are very limited. All events take place upstairs at 1000 Trades in Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter. Bar and food are available for the duration of the weekend downstairs.
