🀝 Why is collaboration essential to delivering better infrastructure in the West Midlands?

For architects, infrastructure isn’t just about systems.
It’s about people, place and long-term value.
And none of that happens in isolation.

As part of the Collaborative Conversations series, RIBA West Midlands is joining ICE, RTPI, CIOB, LI and RICS for a cross-institute discussion exploring how collaboration drives stronger regional outcomes.

Because design quality depends on how well we work alongside engineers, planners, contractors, landscape professionals and surveyors.

🎀 Keynote: David Porter (President, ICE)
🎀 Chair: Dr Rebecca McElliott

From strategic infrastructure initiatives to regional case studies that simply wouldn’t be possible without genuine partnership, we’ll explore how collaboration:

βœ”οΈ Raises professional standards
βœ”οΈ Strengthens public trust
βœ”οΈ Improves delivery
βœ”οΈ Drives innovation

Together, CIOB, ICE, LI, RIBA, RICS and RTPI represent over 360,000 professionals shaping a sector worth Β£100+ billion to the UK economy.

If you’re a RIBA member, this is your opportunity to ensure the architectural voice is central to the future of infrastructure in our region.

A simple sign on New Street.

A quiet reminder of how the details of our streets shape the way we experience cities and towns. Looking back at the projects, events and activities delivered across the region, it’s inspiring to see the ways design is already making a difference.

As we head into 2026, RIBA West Midlands is excited to launch a new programme of events to explore fresh opportunities in placemaking, connecting people, places and communities across the region.

What change would you like to see next year?

Santa came early to Wolverhampton! πŸŽ„

was delighted to support the Annual Christmas Lecture: Retrofit & Sustainable Design, hosted by our Wolverhampton& DistrictSocietyofArchitectsand . The widely respected John Christophers of shared inspiring insights on why retrofit must sit at the heart of a low-carbon future, highlighting the Zero Carbon House in Balsall Heath, Birmingham and projects across Wolverhampton.

After the lecture, we gathered by the Christmas tree for festive photo, and in an unplanned but perfectly fitting moment, John returned wearing his red coat β€” a subtle festive touch, almost as if Santa were handing out retrofit wisdom instead of presents.

A huge thank you to the WDSA, WLVArchitecture, and everyone who joined us. Here’s to continuing the conversation on sustainable design in the new year!
