It was another great well-being walk. Key highlights were seeing the flowers on the brambles which will hopefully turn into blackberries. Hearing chiffchaffs, wrens, robins, long tailed t**s, great t**s and blackcaps. Seeing the dog-rose in flower and buttercups too.

Swifts, the masters of the skies have once again returned to our shores.

Being one of the latest spring migrants to arrive, their time with us is a short one. By September they will be all but vanished once more, their screams silenced until next year.

The young Swifts fledging from this year's nests will likely not land on this earth until they themselves are ready to breed in 3-4 years time.

Will they find a suitable nesting space? Swift populations have suffered around a 60% decline in the last 25 years, largely thought to be due to the loss of nesting sites and reductions in insect numbers.

Several towns and cities across the country have pledged to protect Swifts, and boast 'Swift Streets' and 'hubs'. If you notice Switfs in your local area and want to help, log your sightings on Swift Mapper and consider reaching out to our species volunteer network to see how you can get involved further.
