The Abbasid Caliph Harun Rashid gave his wealth to establish a large library as Waqf in 830 CE, which became known as Baytul Hikmah (House of Wisdom). This was a public library in Baghdad with a large collection of materials on a wide range of subjects. Books written in Greek, Latin, and Persian in the fields of medicine, alchemy, physics, mathematics, astrology and other disciplines were also collected and translated by Muslim scholars at that time.
