Situation at the Poland-Belarus border

An estimate of 3,000 refugees is currently trapped within the Polish-Belarusian border. The Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko is encouraging refugees, mostly from Middle east countries, to enter the European Union from Belarus. But the response of the three countries has been to erect border fences.

At least 10 people have died in the border region already, but it remains difficult to verify and access information as the Polish president announced a state of emergency at the border, making it illegal for journalists and human rights defenders to enter the area.

In this critical situation, with no humanitarian assistance provided by the Polish government to people in need of help, locals have started to do their part and replaced and authorities and NGOs in trying to prevent what could likely be a humanitarian disaster.

Fences are being built and pushbacks have become accepted. Europe Must Act is concerned by the tendency of Member States of the European to prevent people seeking safety from requesting international protection, a fundamental right recognized by the Geneva Convention.

Crime of solidarity | Last week, Mimmo Lucano, the former mayor of Riace, was sentenced to 13 years of prison.

Riace is a small municipality in Southern Italy which, over the last two decades, became known everywhere in Europe for being a humane, sustainable, virtuous example of refugees’ reception and integration. The “Riace model”, which was slowly built thanks to the tireless commitment of Mimmo Lucano, was intended to integrating refugees in the local society while fighting depopulation in the small town.

Lucano was accused of irregularities in managing the reception and integration project for refugees. However, Italy and the whole Europe are shocked by the disproportionality and harshness of the sentence, which will be appealed by the former mayor.

Europe Must Act once again wants to highlight that community-based, bottom-up projects of reception and integration for refugees are not only possible, but also the best solution for both refugees and the local population.

We stand in solidarity with Mimmo Lucano and are extremely concerned by the fact that a person who acted incomplete solidarity with refugees and fighting for virtuous ideals has been punished as a criminal.

Refugees are welcome here! It's time to stand together and defend the right to asylum

Right now, women, children and men fleeing war, persecution and conflict need our support. Yet just when the UK needs to uphold its commitments to refugees, in October the new Nationality and Borders Bill moves closer to becoming law. This bill will make it harder than ever for people who come here to seek safety.
