14 years and going from strength to strength is one of the best established community events in the North West offering a weekend of fun for the entire family The Wirral Flower and Vegetable show was created from a conversation between Tony Niblock and Ken Sutton on a train journey returning from an Allotment Conference in Derby. The first show took place in 2006 hav
ing received sponsorship from Goredale Nursery, Burton, and Wirral for two years which was fantastic and gave us a great start. We then received further funding from a group named Want (What Allotments Need Today) which funded the Thornton Allotment Site for a full refurbishment as well as helping others in the Birkenhead Area. We also received funding from the Birkenhead Community Regeneration Partnership to hire the marquee and other equipment to run the show. This funding took us through to the show in 2008. In 2009 we received some funding from various sources and by us holding plant sales and demonstrations on Flower arranging and raffles. We started off in 2006 with only 120 entrants exhibiting in the show and by 2009 this had grown to about 250 entrants. We anticipate more entrants this year are advertising the show more widely than ever before. Also in 2009 we encouraged local craft people and charities to take stands at the show to promote them and their produce and to add more interest for the general public. In 2010 we had many more stands at the show who all informed us that the day had been very beneficial to them and had made record sales and they would encourage others to take stands in 2011 which they did and our show has consistantly gone from strength to strength.
