Lairdside Communities Together are immensely proud of their latest venture, Wirral’s newest community centre – and the only one in the borough to be based within the grounds of a health centre – will be officially declared open during a community celebration event next week.
Birkenhead MP Frank Field will be the guest of honour when St Catherine’s Community Centre in Tranmere officially throws open its doors to the communities of Birkenhead and Tranmere on Friday 27th June, 1.00pm – 5.00pm. A posthumous award will be given by Phil Davies, to the family of Hazel Roberts, a founder of the Neighbourhood Resource Centre voluntary group, as recognition of her outstanding contribution and dedication to improving Tranmere and Birkenhead communities
There will be plenty of things going on during the event to attract local residents, including free taster sessions of the activities which run from the community centre every week. Local residents can try out Zumba and Tai-Chi sessions, reiki massage, healthy cookery and craft demonstrations.
People will also be asked to complete a survey to share their views around what activities they would like their local community centre to offer and will be entered into a prize draw where they could win one of a wide range of donated prizes, from signed memorabilia donated by the cast of Eastenders and local celebrity Paul O’Grady, to a three-course meal for two at the Prenton Park.
Some of the individuals and organisations that use or support the centre will also be on hand to meet residents, including local councillors, community police officers, health professionals from Wirral Community NHS Trust, officers from the community fire station - complete with fire engine – local residents’ groups and Citizens Advice Bureau advisors.
Local volunteers who run the fresh food Bag a Bargain scheme in the area will be present, while Wirral Lifelong and Family Learning lifelong learning will also demonstrate some of the sessions they run from the centre.
Other family attractions include free face painting and free balloons and there will also be tasty, healthy smoothies available from the pedal-powered smoothie maker.
