🏆 Celebrating Professor Amha Gebremedhin – recipient of the 2026 iCMLf Prize

Today at , Professor Amha Gebremedhin from Ethiopia received the 2026 iCMLf Prize medal, recognising his outstanding work to improve access to CML treatment and monitoring in resource-limited settings.

Introducing Amha, Professor Giuseppe Saglio captured the spirit of the Prize perfectly: “In many parts of the world, progress in the treatment of CML depends not only on scientific advances, but on individuals who translate those advances into reality for patients. Professor Amha Gebremedhin is one such individual."

In his keynote, Amha shared the realities of managing CML in Ethiopia and the remarkable progress he has witnessed over more than two decades. Since access to TKIs became possible in 2004, CML at his centre has changed from a life-threatening disease with survival of less than two years to a manageable condition, with thousands of patients gaining access to treatment.

But important challenges remain – particularly late diagnosis and limited access to regular molecular monitoring and resistance testing. Amha and his colleagues are now working to build local testing capacity and decentralise treatment, bringing CML services closer to patients across Ethiopia.

A truly inspiring example of what dedication, collaboration and equitable access can achieve for people with CML.

Around 50 runners and walkers joined us this morning for the 2026 John Goldman Fun Run through Gothenburg – bringing together the CML community for a great start to the final conference day.

A huge congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part – what a fantastic experience and wonderful atmosphere! 👟

🏆 Celebrating Professor Meinolf Suttorp – recipient of the 2026 iCMLf John Goldman Prize

Today at , Professor Suttorp was presented with the 2026 iCMLf John Goldman Prize medal, recognising his outstanding contributions to pediatric CML.

Introducing the award, Professor Andreas Hochhaus highlighted Meinolf Suttorp's transformative achievements – from leading pediatric trials and registries to building international collaborations, advancing standards of care and supporting patients and their families.

Accepting the Prize, Meinolf Suttorp reflected: “Pediatric CML has been a cornerstone of my scientific and clinical work throughout my career.” He also shared his pride in being “the first pediatrician to receive this award.”

In his keynote, he highlighted the unique challenges of pediatric CML and how international registries and collaboration have been essential to advancing research in such a rare disease. He explored the more aggressive presentation of CML at younger ages, delayed access to newer TKIs for children, and the important long-term impact of treatment on growth and development.

Looking ahead, he called for stronger pediatric CML networks, closer collaboration with adult hematologists, expanded registries and biobanking, and improved access to modern treatments worldwide.

Congratulations, Meinolf Suttorp, on this very well-deserved recognition! 👏
