Congratulations to everyone who was nominated, and a special congratulations to everyone who made it to the shortlist. There were some amazing nominations and I know the judges had some very difficult decisions to make.

‘Crafternoon’ Update in partnership with Rural Us Continues

We're all set up at the Beadnell WI Open Day and can't wait to meet everyone. Come along, look at all the fabulous stalls, grab a cake and have a chat with me about what's going on in your community and what you would like to see going on.

After a few weeks break it was lovely to see everyone at Crafternoon. This afternoon we were inspired to design our own t-shirts, next time we meet up (9 September) we will be translating our designs into reality using fabric paints, stitching and old t-shirts. Should be great fun, and probably messy so wear old clothes.

Crafternoon is a free craft group on Wednesdays between 1.00 and 3.00 at Berwick Voluntary Centre, 5 Tweed Street. Everyone is welcome, there's no need to book just come along.

Crafternoon is running reduced hours over the summer, it is back on on 9 September and after that will be on every week.

The MELISSA bus is heading to Berwick and will be in the Morrisons Car Park on Monday.

Foot health is really important, pop along and find out how best to look after your feet.

🦶 🚌 Next week, our podiatry team are hitting the road on the MELISSA bus and heading up to Berwick!

We're holding a drop-in session at Morrisons car park (TD15 1UQ) on Monday 24 August for residents to find out more about how they can keep their feet healthy.

The team will be there from 8.30am to 4pm to answer all your questions.

There's no need to book ahead, just pop down and speak to one of our team.

We have been informed by Age UK Northumberland of a scam involving Age UK :

Scam calls impersonating Age UK

We’ve become aware of scammers in several areas in the UK calling clients asking about damp/mould or queries around insulation pretending they are from Age UK. These fraudulent calls targeting individuals and clients outside our organisation, including areas that affect local Age UK Partners.

What’s happening?
Scammers are contacting clients by phone asking about damp/mould or queries around insulation pretending they are from Age UK. They are asking for client details and asking personal questions including if they own their own home.

These calls are designed to misuse Age UK’s trusted name and trick recipients into sharing personal information and possibly more. Luckily clients in the cases we are aware of were suspicious and didn’t provide any details to the scammers or probed for more information leading to a scammer hanging up on one client. The clients then notified their local Age UK’s. This resulted in no further action. However, we are unsure if this could have led to financial loss as well as sharing personal information that could have potentially highlighted vulnerabilities too.

What to look out for - Age UK’s top five steps to reduce the risk of being scammed include:

STOP – Never do anything you don’t want to or make any decisions on the spot

CHECK – Always check their credentials, especially tradespeople. Ask for proof of ID, trade accreditations, ensure quotes and contracts are in writing

ASK – Always ask someone you trust for a second opinion

MINE – Do not give away personal information

SHARE – Share your experience with others to lower their risk of being scammed

What Age Uk is doing:
We’ve notified internal colleagues and local Age UK Partners to make them aware of the situation and provided a Media statement that can be used (see below).

We are monitoring the situation closely.

What you need to do if you receive a call:
Your immediate action is crucial to protect yourself and the Age UK brand.

DO NOT give any personal or financial information.

NOTE the number & details down if you can of the scam call.

VERIFY by recommending that clients can say they will call their local Age UK back on the central number or visit them in person. Clients can ask for advisers directly if they are aware of their names or set up passwords if they are receiving active support from specific advisers and want to ensure they are speaking to Age UK when using the telephone.

CHECK the line: Scammers can keep your phone line open even after you’ve hung up. Use a different phone, call someone you know first to check the line is free, or wait at least 10 to 15 minutes between calls to make sure that any scammer have hung up.

REPORT this to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or Text 7726.
Should anyone think a business is unlawful or acted unfairly then they can also call Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 who can help to make a report to Trading Standards.
