As background, an historic walking route in Berkhamsted is under threat and needs your help please. The footpath concerned is Lime Tree Walk which runs from Castle Hill Avenue up to top of Castle Hill, and the woods and fields beyond. It is used by many locals, dog walkers, ramblers and Duke of Edinburgh youngsters.
Residents are deeply concerned by the planning application 24/02910/FUL for a new build house but for which the vehicular access crosses the historic Lime Tree Walk, HP4 1HJ, (right of Way no.24). TPO trees and a large area of grass which is used as a community green space are under threat.
Residents and interested parties have set up Lime Tree Walk Preservation Society to help to protect the historic walking route from Berkhamsted Station to the site of Berkhamsted Place, gateway to the countryside.
Some further historical information about Lime Tree Walk:
"Lime Tree Walk is the surviving upper section of an important additional, tree-lined access route from the south east of Berkhamsted Castle up to Berkhamsted Place, probably constructed in the C18th (it can be identified on the Manorial Map of 1783) and supplementing Castle Hill Avenue, which appears to have been the original route from the Castle when the house was constructed in the former medieval deer park in the 1580s."
