For over thirty years, making the A1 north of Morpeth safe has been trapped in a loop of endless bureaucracy. We’ve seen Regional Transport Boards, the 2014 Feasibility Studies, years of Public Consultation Panels, and the Union Connectivity Review.

Every time momentum builds, Westminster sets up another panel, kicks the decision down the road, and publishes reports instead of laying tarmac. Over £67 million has been spent on red tape and design works alone, only for the scheme to be stalled again.

We don’t need another study. We need a commitment.

That’s why NASA (Northumberland A1 Safety Alliance) is bypassing the traditional political stagnation entirely.

Founded by local business owners Richard Shell & Kezz Petronelli-Stone, we are keeping the strategy simple, focused, and relentless:

Richard Shell (Charlton Hall & Doxford Barns): Brings the heavyweight backing of the regional tourism and hospitality sectors, mobilising the employers who drive Northumberland’s economy.

Kezz Petronelli-Stone (Northumbria Forestry): Brings a proven track record of building successful national campaigns capable of forcing rural issues directly into the national spotlight.

Why will NASA succeed where decades of government reviews have failed?

Because we aren’t setting up a talking shop. Richard and Kezz are galvanising a massive, strictly apolitical, cross-party force uniting local businesses, residents, MPs, cross party councillors, and frontline emergency services.

Instead of waiting for the next government review, we are actively compiling a 10-year evidence dossier of raw data, hard facts, and first-hand collision testimonies. We will take that unarguable proof directly to Westminster to hand it straight to the Prime Minister.

We are demanding immediate safety upgrades for lethal junctions and a funded commitment to dual the A1.

What can the public do? Get behind us, share our posts & keep positive. A gov petition is lodged with the parliamentary petition board. Keep your eyes on this page—the second it goes live, we need your signatures, every single one of you.

NASA has today received an invitation to county hall to meet County Council leader Glen Sanderson, highways, and other key stakeholders in the safety of the A1. North Northumberland MP David Smith & North East Mayor Kim McGuinness have also been brought into the discussion. NASA has begun documenting every single accident in the last 10 years within the section largely being discussed, and has requested that the feasibility studies and spending details carried out so far be made available to avoid any unnecessary duplication and prompt solutions. This is solid & fast progress. It is the intention of NASA to present a case before Westminster with clear facts, solutions & support.

Thank you to everyone following & sharing - that's exactly the way to ensure this campaigns effectiveness.

For clarity the intention is not to use this page as an accident reporting/traffic update centre, there's plenty of other very good sources doing that. Nor will comments be turned on for posts. The objective here is to compile all data within the last 10 years, along with first hand accounts where possible to create a very transparent set of records. Carried out correctly, the need to give opinion is irrelevant & we can concentrate purely on facts & tangible results.

Today NASA begins setting up a website, email address & contacting the relevant authorities for the data we need. We work fast & have zero quit in us.

We do so today from a quiet corner of The Tempus located within The Charlton Hall Estate. Poignant given it was just days ago the scene of yet another accident. The Tempus team last night were awarded Gold in the Awards for Excellence 2026 – Small Hotel of the Year. All in the locality share their pride in that result.

This road is vital to our area & businesses like The Tempus & Charlton Hall rely on it for their guests & staff to travel safely. Share, like, push this page & give us the gravitas we need to make the difference.

NORTHUMBERLAND A1 SAFETY ALLIANCE (NASA)

It shouldn’t be rocket science.

Over the coming months, NASA will compile and publish the definitive 10-year safety record of the A1 through Northumberland.

We will document:

• Fatal collisions
• Serious injuries
• Collision locations
• Road conditions
• Safety concerns raised by communities
• Promises made by authorities
• Progress made – or not made

This is not a political campaign.

This is not a blame campaign.

This is an evidence project.

Too many people have lost their lives. Too many families have been affected. Too many questions remain unanswered.

If you have information, reports, photographs, local knowledge, historical records, media coverage or personal experience relevant to A1 safety, we would like to hear from you.

Our aim is simple:

To produce the most comprehensive public record ever assembled on safety along the A1 through Northumberland.
