Community spirit was in full bloom this summer as PeacePlus Nature staff and volunteers gathered for a dedicated conservation day at The Eco's.

Organised by the Corncrake Project team through PeacePlus Nature, bringing together 14 volunteers for a Himalyan Basalm Bash.

Fuelled by tea and cake, volunteers got to work clearing some of this invasive non-native plant species that has become established in several areas of the park. Left unmanaged it can spread rapidly so early intervention is key to protecting local biodiversity.

The day provided an opportunity to give back to the for their steadfast support of the Corncrake Project over recent years.

All work was carried out in accordance with the NIEA Himalayan Balsam Bashing Guide.

Now that the breeding season has officially wrapped up, our partners working on breeding waders across various key sites; from the Antrim Hills to Fermanagh and Donegal, are collating all their data to bring together the full monitoring results for the season. Supported by the PeacePlus Nature programme, this joint effort helps us track how breeding waders fared this year.

A huge thank you to all the partners, land managers, and volunteers working across these vital landscapes!

The PeacePlus Nature Programme Board recently gathered in County Donegal for a valuable site visit hosted by project partner BirdWatch Ireland

Bringing together the programme partners, with representatives from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM).The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to share progress on PeacePlus Nature, and a chance to see first-hand the work BirdWatch Ireland are doing for Breeding Waders.

During a site walkthrough at Magheragallon, the board had the chance to review the current predator fencing which helps protect key populations of breeding waders, including Lapwing, Dunlin, Snipe and Golden Plover. BirdWatch Ireland shared their plans to upgrade the fencing, which is critical to improving chick survival and nest success rates.

Cross-border partnerships like this allow us to pool expertise and knowledge sharing across the partners to help deliver landscape-scale restoration.

Soft as a cloud, tough as the peat it grows on. ☁️

Bog Cotton (Eriophorum) can be seen swaying in the breeze during the summer months on moorlands or peat sites.

Fun facts about this wild plant:
- It's not actual cotton, those fluffy white tufts are seedheads designed to catch the wind and disperse seeds across vast distances.

- In the past, locals used the silky strands to stuff pillows, make candle wicks, and even bind wounds.

- They thrive in acidic, waterlogged soil and are a key indicator of a healthy, carbon-storing peat landscape.
