Our hearts go out to the victim of the recent attack in north Belfast and his family. This tragedy has deeply shaken our community.

No tragedy, however, should ever be used to target innocent people.

For survivors of human trafficking and exploitation, violence, racism, and intimidation can intensify existing trauma and bring back feelings of fear and uncertainty. We are deeply concerned by the stress and isolation this is causing for many of those we support in Flourish

As one person we support recently shared:

“Thank you very much for your message and for checking on me. I really appreciate your kindness and support. I am safe, although it has been a stressful time. I appreciate all the support from you and the team.”

Attacks on homes, threats, racism, and collective blame are not justice. They only create more trauma and division.

Now is the time to choose compassion, safety, and solidarity over division.

When a survivor escapes human trafficking, breaking free from the exploiter is often only the beginning of a long and difficult journey. The immediate danger may have passed, but the road to recovery is only just beginning.

Many survivors need sustained support to process and overcome the deep physical, emotional and psychological trauma they have experienced, long after the exploitation has ended.

We know that healing is deeply personal and rarely follows a straight line. That is why we are committed to providing long-term, tailored and survivor-centred support that meets each person where they are.

The care and heart of our volunteers has profoundly impacted the lives of survivors on the journey they face. As one male survivor has said:

“The volunteers have made a big difference in my experience. They have always been kind, welcoming, and supportive. Their encouragement has helped me build confidence, improve my communication skills, and feel more comfortable meeting new people.

They are always willing to listen and offer help when needed. I am very grateful for their time, dedication, and positive attitude, and I appreciate everything they do to support others."

Our volunteers also bring incredible joy and heart to our women's activities, as shared by a female survivor who highlighted the amazing work being done:

"I am very happy with [all] the volunteer girls!"

— Female Survivor

Volunteers are truly at the heart of everything we do. Every conversation shared, every coffee made, and every smile and word of encouragement has made a lasting difference.

Our work thrives on community, and our volunteers are the very core of that supportive circle. 🤍

As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week (June 1 to June 7), we want to thank every single volunteer who has added something special to Flourish over the years. Whether you have been with us from the very start or just recently joined the team, we are incredibly grateful to have you with us and don't take it for granted.

To introduce everyone to some of the team, head over to our Stories every day this week as we share a new face from our volunteer community and give you a glimpse behind the scenes!

More than an English class. A place to heal and belong.

Our English support group is for women who are survivors of human trafficking, many seeking asylum or rebuilding their lives as refugees. The classroom is more than learning – it is a safe space, a community, a place for healing.

Women come with incredible strength—but also with experiences of trauma, displacement, and barriers to education. We meet them where they are, supporting language learning at their own pace, while also offering emotional support and understanding.

Through learning English together:

-Confidence grows
-Connections are built
-Stories are shared
-A sense of belonging begins to form

For many, this is the first place they feel safe, heard, and rooted. Research shows that community language spaces like this can support trauma recovery, resilience, and wellbeing—helping individuals process change, rebuild identity, and feel less alone.

This isn’t just about learning a language. It’s about reclaiming voice, rebuilding lives, and creating sanctuary.

Our busy Help Hub runs twice a week at set times and provides an opportunity for clients to see a caseworker on a more flexible basis.

This service acts as a responsive point of contact for those who need support with specific, immediate tasks or simply a moment of guidance without the requirement of a long-term plan.

Whether it is navigating a sudden hurdle, assistance with practical paperwork, or a need for a supportive environment, our Help Hub offers an open door to our expertise. We are pleased to share that last month saw the highest attendance levels recorded since Help Hub began, which demonstrates the importance of accessible, responsive support.

It is a vital space where survivors can access the professional support they need as they continue their journey towards independence, freedom and a brighter future.

Over the past few weeks and as part of Mental Health Week, our male survivors had some great opportunities to get active and take a look at how physical wellbeing can be a way of establishing healthy habits.

We organised a walk up to Belfast Castle and hiked up Cavehill to enjoy the outside, get a bit of fresh air, and work together as a team. It was the first time a few of the survivors had been up there, and reaching the top was a terrific personal achievement for them. Many of them were filming and taking photos feeling the freedom to distract themselves from the difficulty of individual situations they've been facing.

We also welcomed Scott of to speak to the group on exercise and the benefits to mental health. Scott shared from the heart about his own personal journey from some of the lowest moments of his life to where he is now, along with the stories of his clients whose lives have changed through movement.

We really appreciate Scott coming down to talk with us, and a big well done to all the men who joined in.

Messages like this remind us why we do what we do.

Every conversation, every act of kindness, and every moment of support, in whatever way that may look, matters and makes a difference in a survivor’s life.

We are incredibly grateful to every survivor who trusts us with their stories and journeys.

Your courage inspires us in the work we do every single day.

Thank You!

Can you help us? 🗳️ Nominate us at: aib.ie/community-fund

The AIB Community €1 Million Fund is now open for nominations, and we would love your support. It only takes one minute to nominate Flourish, but winning a share of this fund could make a huge difference to the survivors we walk alongside across Northern Ireland.

The charities who received funding in 2025 were the highest nominated in each of their regions thanks to their supporters and local communities. To receive this vital support, we need to be one of the top nominated charities, so every single nomination really counts.

Please share this with your friends and family and encourage them to nominate Flourish NI too. Additional funding is also available through AIB staff nominations, so if you know anyone who works in AIB, please ask them to vote for us!

Details you will need for the form:

Charity Name: Flourish NI
Charity Number: NIC100423
Charity Location: Northern Ireland & Great Britain
Social Theme: Other / Community Support

For “Why should they receive funding?”, you can say:
Flourish NI provides vital long-term, trauma-informed support to survivors of modern slavery. Their work helps people rebuild their lives, find independence, and move toward a brighter future.

Thank you so much for your support!
