Tamhi Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues

Tamhi Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues Mental Health Charity: Sports, Youth & Schools Creating an environment where people can ask for help and support when needed.

About Us

TAMHI is a mental health awareness charity set up in 2011 by Joe Donnelly and Stephen McLaughlin in memory of Thomas "Tammy Tucker" McLaughlin who took his own life in 2009. TAMHI stands for Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues and the charity is set up to work with sport groups willing to use the power of sport to promote Positive Mental Fitness. Sport is reflective of our society

as a whole and therefore it is important that sport addresses the importance of promoting a positive mental fitness for all. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that one in four of us will experience a mental illness at some point in their lives. Participating in sport has a positive contribution to make to a person’s welfare if their experience is one that reflects the positive values of sport;

Key aims of promoting positive mental health in and through sport

1. To raise awareness within sport of the importance of positive mental fitness and how this can have an impact on physical health.

2. Engaging young people and young men in sport to reach out to those with mental health concerns.

3.To raise awareness of the risks of self–harm and importance suicide prevention within sport.

4. Highlight the importance of training with Governing Bodies, Mental Health Groups and clubs for their coaches and volunteers, to support them in spotting early signs of emotional difficulty and risk in current participants.

Social media ban?

What's peoples views.

IF done right it's a positive.

People should verify who they are to get an account.

Young people should not be subjected to any danger or dangerous content

And phones are addictive. Which is negative.

The biggest challenge has always been the diversion from "Social Media" to Sinister Media and that's firmly on the Big Tech companies who should be doing more to keep people safe online..

The flip side

Positive social media exists. We have did a lot of work around how to engage on platforms with young people, as young people use social media

Exam Tips
Cooking tip
Health and Fitness Tips
Engage with positive peer influences
It's not bad when it's "social '

An idea would be that Young People should be given access in controlled spaces such as Youth Centres and Schools with obvious restrictions on safe content and still be taught how to use it safely, Socially, with learning about the challenges and opportunities.

With all due respect, you can't realistically learn business for example without understanding social media a key marketing tool.

Child safety is paramount, but Social media is not going away and many adults have developed bad habits also. An education programme that gives access and allows young people to develop knowledge and skills to use it safely would be so much better than a blanket ban.

Winning Fridays

We are delighted to announce that our joint project with Ulster University Trinity Belfast Hazelwood Integrated College focused on how to make Take 5 and positive mental health in schools better has just won an AI Education Award for best project that promoted cross disciplinary integration.

We had Further Education, Education, Health and Community groups connected to create a new peer mentoring programme focused on championing Take 5 Steps for Wellbeing in schools.

We are extremely grateful to be part of this journey and to draw on the experience of young people and the expertise of Ulster University and community health sector.

We have used this knowledge and learning to create the framework of a stronger program that will shape, change and save lives.

This is sad. We have worked in schools who's halls have been "condemned"

The issue is procurement and the absolute idiotic process schools have to go through to get stuff done. We have all heard of Red Tape and it's just pure incompetence.

EA have to use EA contractors because of "procurement" which was set up with good intentions but just became a absolute barrier which has led to this nonsense.

A school needs painted , a local trades man says il do it for £5000, EA procurement would be £12000 , it's honestly a broken system

Best one that is factually correct , a concrete tile broken, would have taken. £5 new one the caretaker would have put it down..... It was 6 months later and cost £500

Here's the solution. Let schools source their own trades people, one would dare say some parents would be in trades and get stuff fixed faster and cheaper.

Political leaders could just call an emergency meeting, pass new legislation and work to get best value using community knowledge and capacity. It will take a while , but I would say if at the minute there a £92million budget it won't go far under current process and red tapes.

Why are we commenting?

We love our school community and they deserve better and they deserve the best support.

Deterioration and an £800 million maintenance backlog could see schools forced to close if not addressed, the Education Authority (EA) has warned.
