Social Enterprises are being run by teams of dedicated, highly responsible staff right across NI. The pressure on them is significant, because when their social enterprise fails, their social mission - the people and communities who rely on them - are let down.

This is why getting the institutional commitment to social enterprise is so vital. Without the systemic architecture, without the conditions for success. social enterprise will always be marginalised instead of celebrated for the social and economic powerhouse it actually is.

We urge all social enterprise MLAs to attend the next All Party Group on Tuesday 13th Oct at 1pm to hear our manifesto for the sector as presented by SENI's Interim CEO Amanda Johnston.

Sometimes the best way to look at the impact of a social enterprise is - what would life be like in their local area if they didn't exist?

Social Enterprise is the ideal business model for The Resurgam Trust. It helps them earn profits that are put right back into their community work.

Like the Resurgam Youth Initiative that supports young people of all ages,

Or the Lisburn Safe Project - a community based safety initiative staffed by 500 volunteers who are trained to sort out low level anti-social behaviour issues before they become serious problems. This important service reduces pressure on the PSNI and generally makes life easier for ordinary people.

SENI's Social Enterprise of the Month for October is The Resurgam Trust. This team of change makers took a beautiful old building full of memories and saved it, creating 2 new social enterprises The Tea Room at Hilden Mill and Little Weavers Day Care and 25 new jobs in the process.

The old national school in Hilden is now a centre of the community, packed full from the moment it opens.

An excellent piece of research prepared by Seán Byers from and launched by Minister Caoimhe Archibald, Department for the Economy NI - our own board members Gavin Annon and Dave Linton were there on behalf of SENI.

This report states that cooperatives generate more than £1.5bn in income and are disproportionately rooted in deprived urban and rural communities. NI has what it takes to create a thriving co-operative economy, but like other forms of social enterprise, there are critical gaps in awareness, policy, infrastructure and finance. There's work to do. But first, give this report a read.

The lucky among us were inspired by adults who took the time to listen, understand, see our potential.
