Every weekday, tens of thousands of motorists speed along the Beetham Highway, glancing towards Beetham Gardens, a community whose name has become one of the most recognisable and often misunderstood in Trinidad and Tobago.
Yet few know that neither the highway nor the community was named after one of its residents.
Both derive their name from the former Beetham Estate, itself named after Sir Edward Betham Beetham, the last British-born Governor of Trinidad and Tobago.
