🎂Lucy was 10 years old last week🎊
In September 2024 Lucy went to her new forever home as sadly her owner was very poorly and unable to care for her any more.
Her Mummy says:
"I still love her so much and she is such a good little dog. She loves hunting around the garden first thing in the morning, dashing out at 100 miles an hour, she only has one speed in the garden! She loves her food!
She is a very anxious little person and loves routine. I realised this week that although she has one or two sunny spots she loves to warm her tummy in, the heat has made her disappear into the undergrowth in preference to a dark corner in the house.
Thank you Suloti for Lucy"🐶🥰

☀️🐾 Safe Summer Travels with Your Four-Legged Friend 🐾☀️

As the warmer days roll in, many of us are heading out on adventures with our beloved dogs. Whether it’s a short trip or a long journey, their safety and comfort always come first 💛

Here are some gentle reminders to help keep your pup happy and safe on the road:

🚗 Travel smart in the heat
• Plan journeys for early morning or later evening when it’s cooler
• Keep air conditioning comfortable, but not blowing directly onto your dog’s face
• A slightly open window is fine—but never let your dog travel with their head out

💧 Hydration & comfort
• Always bring fresh water and a bowl, especially for longer trips
• Avoid travelling right after meals
• Bring a favourite toy or blanket to help them feel safe and reassured

🤢 If your dog struggles with travel
• Speak with your vet if your dog experiences motion sickness

🛑 Take regular breaks
• Give your dog plenty of opportunities to stretch their legs, drink water, and relax

🏷️ Check their ID
• Make sure their microchip details are up to date
• Ensure they’re wearing a collar with correct identification

❗️ A life-saving reminder
Never leave your dog alone in a car.
Even on mild days, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise dangerously fast. This can lead to heatstroke and dehydration—both of which can be fatal.

🐶 Safe ways for your dog to travel
• A crate or boot crate for security and comfort
• A pet carrier for smaller dogs
• A properly fitted travel harness

📖 It’s also worth checking the Highway Code and your insurance policies to ensure you’re travelling within guidelines and fully covered.

“The sun is rich and gladly pays in golden hours, silver days.”
Let’s make those golden hours safe, kind, and full of wagging tails 🐕💕

Wherever your journey takes you this season, travel safely—and thank you for putting your dog’s wellbeing first 🐾

☕“Coffee Break Chat…” To walk or not to walk…that is the question”
(apologies to Mr Shakespeare)
May has been a very welcomed and sunny month bringing much warmth after a long wet and miserable weather-wise winter but it has also bought its challenges; one of them being walking the dog.

The RSPCA recommend daily walks but they are not strictly mandatory. The trouble is, our world is so busy these days and we have become more experienced with juggling than the original circus clown and so it’s becoming difficult to be flexible and move away from the comfort of routine. With this in mind I have been doing a little research.

🐾Walking our 4paws is without doubt very important. It helps them to socialise and a “sniff walk” is excellent for their mental stimulation. Dogs can satisfy their natural curiosity as they pick up their “Pmails” A dog walk is also an excellent opportunity to have some one-to-one time with our best friend(s) to escape the mundane and have some freedom. The organised Charity walks have proved a very popular socialisation event not only for 4paws but also for their owners. Healthwise dogs’ benefit from their walks helping to reduce the risk of obesity and a way of maintaining muscle tone. However, all this is not the whole story.

🧸If, for whatever reason, a walk has to be missed its not the end of the world for the time can be filled with scent games – treats hidden round the house or garden; puzzle toys such as a snuffle mat or other interactive toys (there is so much out there for 4paws) and maybe it could open up the opportunity for some indoor training, such as learning new tricks.
There are also suggestions that the odd rest days benefits our dogs and interestingly I read that for anxious dogs or reactive dogs, taking a walk break and focusing on something indoors presents enrichment to help their mental health.

My challenge these past few days has been the heat. How about you? I walk mine either very early or very late in the day. I do the 7second hand test – if I can’t hold the back of my hand on the pavement for 7 seconds its far too hot for paws. I also have adopted the rule of keeping mine indoors between 11am and 3pm when the heat is at its most intense. Dachshunds love to sun bathe and will take every opportunity and as I don’t have sufficient shade in my back garden this strategy reduces the risk of them getting heatstroke.
What can you share with us that you have found works well and could possibly help others? I am sure we shall be having more heat waves over the next 3 to 4 months. It would be good to hear from you.💬

Good to chat. C.Ch

🐶Brindy went to his new home just over 3 years ago. He was recovering from his second IVDD surgery and was also a very anxious little chap. 🥰
We were so lucky to find the most amazing adopters for Brindy and this is what they say:
" It has been so rewarding adopting Brindy whom we adore! He is our complicated boy but we manage that. We went out for lunch yesterday and he was extremely well behaved, unlike our other Dachshund who stole a hankie out of a ladies bag 🤣"

We are always looking for kind, considerate and patient adopters who are prepared to work with a rescue dog as well as having the time to help these special dogs. NOT ALL dogs have behavioural issues but some will need help with training, setting boundaries and establishing a routine.

If you feel you could offer a home to a Dachshund in need please complete our application form:

☀️🐾 Keeping Our Dogs Safe in the Heat 🐾☀️

As temperatures rise, it’s so important to remember that our dogs rely on us to keep them safe. Unlike us, they can’t cool down by sweating through their skin. Dogs regulate their temperature by panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose—and heatstroke can sadly become fatal in just minutes.

💔 Please know the signs of heatstroke:
Excessive panting, dribbling, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, wobbling or lack of coordination, vomiting or diarrhoea, and in severe cases, collapse or loss of consciousness.

If you notice any of these, act immediately:
Move your dog somewhere cool, gently wet their coat with cool (not icy) water, and call your vet right away.

🌿 A little planning can save a life 🌿

Here are some simple, loving ways to protect your dog during warmer days:

💧 Fresh, clean water should always be available.
🌅 Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. A good rule: if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
🚗 Never leave a dog in a car—even with windows open or parked in the shade. Temperatures can rise dangerously fast.
🌳 Encourage rest in shaded areas in the garden. Some dogs may enjoy a gentle splash in a paddling pool or sprinkler—but always let them choose.
✂️ Regular grooming can help remove excess fur and keep them comfortable.
🧊 Cooling vests can offer extra relief on particularly hot days.
🏡 During peak heat (11am–3pm), it’s often safest to keep them indoors.

🌞 A gentle reminder:
Dogs with pale or thin coats can be more prone to sunburn—especially on their ears and noses. Pet-safe suncream can help protect them. And if your dog has any skin conditions, the sun may make these worse, so it’s always worth checking with your vet.

Every dog deserves to feel safe, comfortable, and loved—especially in the heat. A few small changes can make a huge difference.

🐶💛 Let’s look out for them, always.

😌We have received such a lovely review and we thought we would share it with you today! ( The photo is lovely Wallace enjoying a doggy icecream during one of his first outings in the stroller kindly supplied to us by Pets Own Us )

"What an incredible charity! Wallace my standard Dachshund was struck with his 4th episode of IVDD and I got in contact with Suloti Dachshund support to enquire about hiring a stroller to enable us to still get out and about. Sue replied to my enquiry the very next day and offered lots of support and reassurance. Our stroller was sent out to our home address within 3 days! We were also kept updated on the tracking for the delivery. I was very impressed with the condition of the stroller we have borrowed, its in almost brand new condition! Thank you Suloti Dachsund Support 🐾🐾"

🎂Happy Birthday to pretty Charlie who celebrates her 8th Birthday today!
Charlie went to her (yes Charlie is a girl) new home in July 2024 and we received a lovely update from her owner:

"Charlie's fantastic, she is such a loving dog and she is living the life. She loves going out in the garden and sunbathing as soon as the sun's out, even in the middle of winter!
She gives us lots of kisses and I don't think we could live without her now. She will be 8 years old on 21st May and enjoys running round the field like a 2 year old!"
