☀️🐾 Keeping Our Dogs Safe in the Heat 🐾☀️
As temperatures rise, it’s so important to remember that our dogs rely on us to keep them safe. Unlike us, they can’t cool down by sweating through their skin. Dogs regulate their temperature by panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose—and heatstroke can sadly become fatal in just minutes.
💔 Please know the signs of heatstroke:
Excessive panting, dribbling, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, wobbling or lack of coordination, vomiting or diarrhoea, and in severe cases, collapse or loss of consciousness.
If you notice any of these, act immediately:
Move your dog somewhere cool, gently wet their coat with cool (not icy) water, and call your vet right away.
🌿 A little planning can save a life 🌿
Here are some simple, loving ways to protect your dog during warmer days:
💧 Fresh, clean water should always be available.
🌅 Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. A good rule: if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
🚗 Never leave a dog in a car—even with windows open or parked in the shade. Temperatures can rise dangerously fast.
🌳 Encourage rest in shaded areas in the garden. Some dogs may enjoy a gentle splash in a paddling pool or sprinkler—but always let them choose.
✂️ Regular grooming can help remove excess fur and keep them comfortable.
🧊 Cooling vests can offer extra relief on particularly hot days.
🏡 During peak heat (11am–3pm), it’s often safest to keep them indoors.
🌞 A gentle reminder:
Dogs with pale or thin coats can be more prone to sunburn—especially on their ears and noses. Pet-safe suncream can help protect them. And if your dog has any skin conditions, the sun may make these worse, so it’s always worth checking with your vet.
Every dog deserves to feel safe, comfortable, and loved—especially in the heat. A few small changes can make a huge difference.
🐶💛 Let’s look out for them, always.
