Many funding programmes quite understandably look for big numbers and quick outcomes.
But community change does not always look like that.
Keep Luton Tidy is not funded. There are no targets, no contracts and no reports to write. What there is, is something far more powerful, people who simply keep showing up for their community, month after month, year after year.
Two brilliant examples from today.
In Devon Road, a small group has now been out cleaning their neighbourhood every month for four and a half years.
There were six people out this afternoon – including two new volunteers. Because of their consistency, the area is no longer overwhelmed by litter. Today’s session was simply surface maintenance, keeping on top of the space they have transformed through steady effort, they litter pick, they sweep, they w**d, they clear the drains, and most of all, they connect.
Over in Limbury Mead, seven volunteers came together and collected 15 bags of litter. This group is celebrating four years of action this month.
These are not headline-grabbing numbers. But they represent something far more important, long-term civic pride and ownership of place.
Small groups.
Consistent action.
Real impact.
Sometimes, the most powerful community work is simply people who care enough to turn up and keep going.
