This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating our brilliant South Glos Peers – pictured here receiving the Contribution to the Community Award at last year’s Developing Health and Independence Annual Event.

Some of those pictured have since moved into paid roles within DHI, showing the real opportunities that volunteering can open up.

We’re now looking for new volunteers. If you’re interested in using your experiences to support others across criminal justice, housing, mental health, and drug and alcohol services, we’d love to hear from you.

These are rewarding and varied roles that offer meaningful, hands-on experience.

“The Families & Carers Group gives me strength.”

Having a child who’s got a problem with drugs can feel isolating.

Rachael joined Developing Health and Independence's Families & Carers Group in January this year, after hoping things would improve on their own. But instead, they became more difficult.

"I thought, I need somebody to talk to about this; someone who knows what I’m going through," she says.

Through the group, Rachael found exactly that. A space where people share similar experiences, support each other and explore ways to cope – both for themselves and their loved ones.

“It can be hard reaching out for help," she says. "If you think about it for too long, you probably wouldn't do it. But once I'd made the decision that something was going to have to change, I realised I had to start speaking out about the situation.”

With the support of the Families & Carers Group, Rachael says there is now something that once felt out of reach: hope.

If you’re supporting someone with drug or alcohol issues, you don’t have to go through it on your own. Our Families & Carers Service can help.

❓What do Simon Roche and Heidi Louise Whittington have in common?

They both started as DHI Peer volunteers – and now they work with us supporting communities with housing, mental health and drug & alcohol services.

DHI Peers are trained to use their own lived experience to support others.

We’re now recruiting Peers across Bristol, BANES, Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, to work across our Young People’s, Criminal Justice, Mental Health, Drug & Alcohol Support, Smoking Cessation and Families & Carers Services.

✨What you’ll gain as a DHI Peer:

• Access to the DHI Peer Academy (receive tailored learning and accredited qualifications)
• Hands-on experience across our services
• Great opportunities for students needing placements
• Valuable experience to help you progress your career
• Work alongside passionate teams and community partners
• Make a real impact through compassionate, evidence-based support

“Becoming a Peer changes lives,” says Heidi. “Both the people you support and your own. It gave me a sense of purpose at a difficult time and, ultimately, was a route back into paid work that suits me, my family and my recovery.”

Simon adds: "Peer work led me to paid work at DHI. I'm now both the Peer Lead and a Mental Health Treatment Practitioner for the Criminal Justice service. I get an incredible amount of satisfaction from my roles and would implore anyone else with lived experience to put it to good use as a Peer."
