💜 It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and this year’s theme is action.

We see every day how mental health is shaped by the circumstances people are living in. Money worries, unsafe housing, debt, health problems and stress can leave people feeling trapped and powerless.

At Clean Slate, action means practical support delivered with empathy. It means helping someone sort the bill, make the call or understand their options, while also making sure they feel heard, respected and less alone. 🤗

👇Our clients have told us what that action has meant this year:

🏠At Clean Slate, we’re backing the WE Rent campaign, supporting renters and landlords across the West of England to understand the changes coming under the Renters’ Rights Act.

Access to clear, reliable information isn’t a ‘nice to have’, it’s essential to tackling inequality and helping people stay secure in their homes. Without it, people fall behind. With it, they can take control. 💪

Clear rights. Clear responsibilities. Make sure we know what it means for us.

NEW VACANCY: QUIDS IN COACH

Location: Hybrid, Bath & North East Somerset
Hours: Part time, 22.25 hours per week
Contract: Permanent
Salary: £18,025 per annum/ £25,750 pro rata

We are now looking for Quids In Coaches to add to our brilliant team. Our Quids In Coaches work with people struggling with their finances: the risk of debt, rent arrears and ultimately even homelessness. You will support them to build their skills, take control of their finances and find employment. This involves face to face support in our local Quids In Centres and also making contact with new referrals by phone and email and providing information, advice and guidance, including signposting them to specialist advice and regulated bodies. It may include helping people to use digital tools to be better off.

Apart from supporting clients remotely over the phone from your home, you will cover our drop-ins at Quids In Centres, to work with partner agencies and statutory bodies in the local area and to assist us with our money skills and employment workshops and training run by our tutors. Alongside you, at the drop in, you will have Peer Workers on work placements which you will be supervising on site with support from your Team Leader.

To succeed in this role, you must be a great communicator with a natural coaching style and the ability to provide a service that is welcoming to all. You will have insight into the needs of vulnerable people from diverse backgrounds and understand the need for confidentiality when working with personal information. You must be a competent user of IT, including email and using the Internet, and an organised administrator.

We are looking for someone with an understanding of discrimination and equality and diversity issues, including those not set out in law such as the ‘poverty premium’ would be and someone who shares our values.
Above all, you must be committed to Clean Slate’s vision and mission of fair opportunity for all and helping people on low incomes to help themselves to become better off.

We particularly welcome applications from anyone with lived experience of struggling with poverty or barriers to employment. We embrace all forms of flexible working - we can’t promise that we can accommodate every form of flexible working in every job, but we welcome conversations about ways of working that suit you and us.

Our staff benefits include access to mental and emotional health support via our Employee Assistance Programme and opportunities to further develop your skills, including by our own excellent in-house training. Our culture is open and we encourage everyone to contribute to the direction of the organisation. We live our values and are accredited by the Living Wage Foundation. We have signed up to Disability Confident and the Social Mobility Pledge and have joined Working Families’ campaign, "Happy to Talk Flexible Working".

📢 Now recruiting!

Deputy Head of Programmes – National (able to travel to West of England and London)
▪️ £21,465, per annum (FTE: £35,775)
▪️ 22.5 hours per week
▪️ Permanent

Are you an experienced leader in the support or advice sector? Want to take your skills to a national level and shape impactful services across the UK?

Clean Slate is looking for a strategic, data-informed Deputy Head of Programmes to help us tackle poverty and reduce inequalities for people on low incomes - wherever they are in the UK.

This is a rare opportunity to drive real change at scale, supporting regional teams, enhancing impact reporting, and helping us improve lives through our innovative Quids in! programmes.

About the Role

We’ve developed a system that works, and now we’re scaling it. Our frontline Money Coaches support people to improve their financial wellbeing, manage cost-of-living pressures, and move towards employment. As Deputy Head of Programmes, you’ll play a critical leadership role in ensuring consistent, high-quality delivery across regions.

You’ll work directly with Team Leaders, supporting and challenging them to build strong local teams. You’ll help streamline operations, promote safeguarding best practice, and ensure our data and insights directly influence service design and national strategy. You’ll also deputise for the Head of Programmes, ensuring the continuity and accountability of our work.
This is not an entry point into the sector, we’re looking for someone who already understands the landscape, the language, and the lived experiences of our service users.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who:

▪️ Has significant experience in programme or service delivery in the advice, support, or community development sectors
▪️ Has successfully led or supervised delivery teams, preferably in multiple locations
▪️ Understands the challenges faced by low-income households and how services can address them
▪️ Uses data confidently to monitor performance, identify risks, and drive improvement
▪️ Brings strong safeguarding knowledge and confidence in leading safe practice
▪️ Is skilled at building collaborative working relationships across internal and external stakeholders
▪️ Communicates with clarity and empathy, in writing and in person
▪️ Is highly organised, solutions-focused, and ready to step up when needed

You’ll need to bring sector insight - and in return, we’ll give you the platform to influence, develop and grow.

Why Join Us?

▪️ You’ll lead change that directly improves lives
▪️ You’ll help us scale our model to reach more people across the UK
▪️ You’ll join a mission-led team that’s serious about making an impact
▪️ We offer a flexible, supportive workplace that values diversity and inclusion
▪️ We’ll invest in your development and involve you in strategic decision-making

How to Apply

Please send your CV and a short statement (no more than two pages) outlining how you meet the essential and desirable personal specifications.

Famous for his Reggae Reggae sauce, Levi Roots took time out to talk money to Quids in!: "I grew up in the Caribbean and back then we used to save money in a tin. Today most people keep their cash in the bank, but back then the temptation was to just dip into it. So I had to develop a good attitude towards saving money. My grandmother was a great saver and she’d always save for a purpose, and never touch the money unless she reached her target. It would be great to see how happy she was when she finally did. So I grew up learning to be careful with money. I never had much so I learnt to respect what I got, but at the same time to always save towards a purpose rather than just putting it away for a rainy day."

The starting point of so many journeys back to taking control, putting people back in the driving seat of their finances... and their lives.

One of the first corporate partnerships Quids in! established was with Wessex Water, who funded our A3 fold-out Budget Planner. These remain hugely popular as they simplify the process of listing readers' income and outgoings. Our latest research found just 17% felt their income would last a month but less than half our readers knew how much was either coming in or going out.

Quids in! is designed for people on low incomes but Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, allowed us to share his advice (and his pic) not once, but twice. We keep to our lane and avoid credit card and investment advice. Our readers want to know what they're missing out on and how to keep their kids' tummies full.

This time 17 years ago, we were setting out on our very first edition of Quids in! magazine. It was founder Jeff Mitchell's brainchild, after working with the Bristol Financial Inclusion Forum, drawing on his experience as managing director of The Big Issue to create an accessible read for low-income social tenants. No-one could foresee the success it was to become. This was the first ever edition in December 2008.
