Outstanding news which reinforces our role as the UKs National Custodian of Remembrance

We are pleased to announce today that from September 2026 the National Memorial Arboretum will be known as the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens.

The RBL has been the Arboretum’s parent charity since 2003, and the two charities recently merged as one. The name change is inspired by RBL’s vision to bring society together to recognise, remember, and support the Armed Forces community and reflects the site’s role at the centre of our Remembrance work.

Since it opened to the public 25 years ago, the destination has grown into a beautiful and inspiring place where everyone can celebrate lives lived and remember lives lost and welcomes more than 300,000 visitors each year. As part of our aims to evolve Remembrance and widen participation, the site will bring more people together to reflect, learn and remember service and sacrifice.

RBL National Remembrance Gardens describes a place that invites people in, not just to reflect, but to take an active part in Remembrance.

The Arboretum’s founder, Commander (Rtd) David Childs CBE, has expressed his strong support for the development, praising RBL for its stewardship of the site and how it has helped it flourish.

From a seed of an idea to the nation’s year-round place to remember, the Arboretum has been shaped by the people who care for it. That shared commitment from employees, volunteers, supporters and communities will continue as it enters its next chapter as the RBL National Remembrance Gardens.

Well done Richard Davey and the cadets who played active roles, the Salvation Army and the Odiham Military Wives who made this a memorable remembrance. But, the biggest shout out goes to the young people of Basingstoke who came and paid respects. We must do all we can to ensure that they understand the need for remembrance so that they can take it forward in the future.

Good day for Basingstoke / Old Basing at the Festival of Remembrance. Tim Russell (PAO for Old Basing) was in the muster representing the RBL (and Avril got 3 seconds of centre tv fame as they zoomed in on the audience). George Grinham (Basingstoke RAFA) had his first ceremony as the new National Standard Bearer for RAFA. As always, the event was superb recognising our WW 2 veterans, and our serving personnel of the King’s Colour Squadron and the RM band showed why they are the best in the world.

We will be there to encourage the audience to support the poppy appeal. Thank to Colin and the team for supporting the RBL
We used to say “wear your poppy with pride” but you can add to that “wear your poppy to show you care”
Good luck to the team with this poignant production

The set is built, the costumes are prepped, and our incredibly talented cast and crew are buzzing with excitement for the opening night of Private Theatricals’ production of ‘My Boy Jack’.
We’re thrilled to welcome our sold-out audiences and hope you enjoy this powerful and moving performance. Your support also means the world to us as we raise funds for our chosen charity, The Royal British Legion.
Let the show begin!

I’m proud to be leading the borough’s Remembrance commemorations this year.

🔴 The Remembrance Sunday service will take place on Sunday 9 November at 11am at the War Memorial outside the Civic Offices, following a parade from Market Place through the Top of the Town.
🔴 A short Armistice Day service will be held on Tuesday 11 November at 11am at the same location.

These events are a chance for us all to come together, reflect, and pay tribute to those who have served and sacrificed.
