Cubs Learn Pickleball with the Dunstable Hunters Pickleball Club

This week, our Cubs were treated to an exciting visit from Martin and Trudy of the Dunstable Hunters Pickleball Club. The session introduced the Cubs to the fast-growing sport of Pickleball, and it was a hit from the very start!

Martin and Trudy guided the Cubs through the basics of the game, showing them how to hold the paddle, serve, and rally. The Cubs then took part in a variety of fun and active games that helped them practice their skills, develop coordination, and most importantly—work together as a team.

It was fantastic to see the energy, enthusiasm, and teamwork on display throughout the session. The Cubs had a brilliant time learning something new, and many are already looking forward to playing again!

We're also excited to share that Trudy will be running Pickleball sessions during the school holidays. Please keep an eye on the page for more details as they are announced.

A big thank-you once again to Martin, Trudy, and the Dunstable Hunters Pickleball Club for their time and enthusiasm—it was a truly memorable experience for our Cubs.

Cubs enjoyed an evening of Pancake Making. Cubs learnt about the significance of Shrove Tuesday and how it marks the last day before Lent and the tradition of using up rich foods like eggs and butter by making pancakes. The cubs also learnt fire safety principles and the importance of staying safe around heat sources, such as griddles and frying pans. Each cub was shown how to stay a safe distance from the cooking area and how to handle the equipment carefully.
The cubs worked together to make the pancake batter, following the instructions and shaking the pancake mix thoroughly.
The cubs were shown the technique of gently shaking the frying pan and using a spatula to help turn the pancakes to make sure they cooked evenly. A fun and exciting part was learning how to flip the pancakes!
Once the pancakes were cooked, the cubs were able to add their choice of toppings. They experimented with:
Lemon, Sugar, Chocolate Spread and Honey, with some cubs using all the toppings together! Thanks to our helpers this evening

Kate from Harlington Hedgehog Hospital visited the cubs and spoke about hedgehogs, focusing on their vulnerability to extinction. She shared tips on how to help them, including feeding them meaty dog or cat dried food or specialised hedgehog food, providing water in a shallow dish, and explaining what to do if a hedgehog is found in distress. Kate also showed the cubs fleas and ticks, which can be harmful to hedgehogs, and brought along some hedgehog poo 💩 to help them understand more about hedgehog health. Graham made a hedgehog feeding station, and the cubs helped decorate it. The feeding station will be placed outside the back of Unity Hall, stocked with food and water, and the cubs will assist in keeping it replenished. The cubs completed a word search and coloured in hedgehog pictures, which will be displayed on the cubs' notice board in Unity Hall. Kate explained that Harlington Hedgehogs is a charity that relies on fundraising to keep their hospital running. If any of the cups would like to donate some meaty dried cat food please bring this along next week and we will arrange to drop this off to Kate. Cubs ended the session with a game of "mingle".
