🔴🔴“Sorry for being crap.”🔴🔴

Imagine hearing that from a referee after a grassroots football match.

Then imagine finding out **the referee is 14 years old and refereeing their first ever game.**

Fourteen.

Learning. Nervous. Making mistakes. Trying to get decisions right while players, coaches and adults react to every call.

We give young players time to develop.

⚽⚽Young referees need exactly the same.⚽⚽

Without referees, there is no game. And if we make their first few experiences miserable, we shouldn't be surprised when they don't come back.

So next time a young referee gets something wrong, remember:

👏They might be learning too.👏

Give them time. Give them encouragement. Give them a reason to come back next weekend.

The correct shinpad can make a huge difference!

This happened to an U16 player in a different league in the UK during a game this weekend. Take a look at that shin pad!

It took the impact so the player’s shin didn’t have to.

Football is physical. Tackles happen, boots connect and accidents happen — often with absolutely no intent or foul play involved.

That’s why at the BDJFL we insist that every player wears properly fitted shin pads for both training and matches. It’s not something we’re prepared to compromise on.

Parents — please check your child’s shin pads regularly. Make sure they’re in good condition and, importantly, big enough to provide meaningful protection. Those tiny fashion-style pads might look good, but protection is what matters.

This one certainly did its job! 👏⚽

Protect the players. Wear the pads.

The BDJFL and LFA expect respect to be given to all of our match officials throughout the season at every game

If you see a referee wearing a yellow armband, they are a child.

A young person brave enough to pick up a whistle, walk into the middle of a football pitch and make decisions in front of players, coaches and parents.

They won't get every decision right.

Neither will the players.
Neither will the coaches.
Neither will you.

So when you see that yellow armband:

Be patient.
Encourage them.
Protect them.
Let them learn.

Because that 14-year-old you support this weekend could become a referee for the next 40 years.

The one who gets shouted at, abused or humiliated?

They might put the whistle down on Sunday and never pick it up again.

Please show our match officials respect at all times, any incidents reported by them will be dealt with directly by the LFA.
