Someone is very chatty this morning! Wouldn't come outside and see me though, he didn't fancy another shower 🤣

Toto this morning having a shower 🌧️

He then spotted me spying on him through the bathroom window 🤣

Miracle exploring my cupboard under the stairs...and I'm pretty sure she is judging me for the mess?! 🤣

Never a dull moment in this house!

As well as preening, I think we all know by now that Miracle cannot resist time in the tub! Aka my washing up bowl! How cute are those little jumps though!! 🥹

Owls have a preen gland at the base of their tail that secretes waxy oil. They rub their beaks against the oil gland and spread the oil over their feathers like a conditioner to keep them flexible and strong. It also benefits their skin and provides antimicrobial protection.

Preening gives the owl a flawless feather structure and allows them to fly silently. Clean and well groomed feathers trap heat and keep the owls warm. They also protect their skin from dirt, dust, and mites.

Owls preen daily and it is an important part of their routine ❤️

In the wild Tawny Owls and Barn Owls can occupy the same general area, when their preferred home ranges overlap.

However, they do prefer different habitats and their behaviors can be somewhat different. For example, Tawny Owls prefer woodlands and they can be fiercely territorial. Barn Owls prefer open countryside, and are considered less territorial.

With regard to Miracle, she ALWAYS starts the argument with Sir Gawain! I never leave them alone together, in fact I rarely let them both out at the same time in the house, and this video shows why ....

But don't worry Sir Gawain is absolutely fine 💙

*warning - dead chick in video*

Owls do not have teeth to chew their food. They also do not have a crop, enabling them to eat small prey whole. It passes directly into their specialised digestive system.

Toto is able to eat a chick whole, but he will tear larger prey like quail into manageable pieces using his very sharp and strong hooked beak.

Every morning Toto and I have a routine. He likes to have a "head scratch" through the window 🤣

He actually doesn't mind a real one but that's the only area he tolerates. If you attempt to touch him anywhere else you are likely to lose a hand! 🫢

Toto didn't want his tea tonight, he said he'll save it for later 🙄😂

I will never take for granted the bond I have with these magnificent birds. Owls are able to remember individual human faces and can tell the difference between those who take care of them and strangers. I am in no doubt that they know who I am and their behaviour around me shows this 💖
