Physical activity for women after childbirth - Safe ways to get started
Physical activity plays an important role in helping mothers recover physically and emotionally after giving birth. For most women, gentle activities such as walking, stretching, pelvic floor exercises, are good starting points.
Walking with your baby can provide many benefits for both mum and baby and is a good way for mums to try and get the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity every week.
Walking can offer a simple and enjoyable way to support a mother's recovery, improve mental wellbeing, encourage family bonding, and provide babies with valuable outdoor experiences, when done safely and during cooler parts of the day.
The timing and intensity of exercise should depend on individual recovery and any medical advice received, particularly after a caesarean birth.
