Beaford Archive: An ‘endless tapestry’ of rural north Devon

The Beaford Archive is a testament to the work of the late artist and photographer James Ravilious, who was commissioned by Beaford Arts in 1972 to document the people and landscape of rural north Devon. Ravilious's own work for the Beaford Archive covers the 1970s and 1980s. In addition, he copied over 7,000 old photographs of the same

area spanning the period 1880-1920. On his death in 1999, both collections became the property of Beaford Arts. The archive now holds more than seventy thousand images with a selection of seventeen hundred now available to view online at https://beaford.org/beaford-archive . This archive has become what the Royal Photographic Society calls a ‘unique body of work, unparalleled at least in this country for its scale and quality’.

The Lost Decades: Phase Two begins…

After months spent exploring the Beaford Old Archive with our brilliant community leads, sharing memories online and welcoming people to open days, we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped identify people, places and stories so far. It has been wonderful, and we celebrate all their achievements this Volunteers’ Week.

Now we’re on a mission to help fill the missing years between 1945 and 1970.

Each week, we’ll be sharing a new “missing thread” from the archive. Connections between old photographs, familiar places and shared histories that feel like they’re missing a piece of the puzzle…

First up: Bideford Bridge

Do you have a photograph of Bideford Bridge taken between 1945 and 1970?

If you do, we’d love to hear from you. Please email [email protected]

You can also bring your photos of Bideford to the next community event on Monday June 29th at Lavington Church Hall - 10:30-12:30. Find out more, share your old photographs from 1945-1970 and enjoy a free cuppa, biscuits, and conversation as we delve into local histories together.

Help us explore North Devon’s Lost Decades.

This week’s selection of photographs from the Beaford Archive features scenes from Atherington, Bideford, Dolton, Hatherleigh and Kings Nympton.

Perhaps you recognise a location, can place a building, or know something about the people and events captured in these images. Every detail helps us add to the historical record and deepen our understanding of North Devon’s past.

Huge congratulations to Theatre Workhouse and Multi Story Theatre Company on securing Arts Council England funding to bring ambitious new theatre making to Barnstaple and across North Devon.

This is such a positive and significant investment in the cultural life of the area, creating space for new stories, new collaborations and new opportunities for local artists and communities.

Tonight also sees the first Theatre Workhouse Scratch Night at Barnstaple Guildhall, the beginning of a regular space for local theatre makers to test ideas, share work in progress and connect with audiences. A brilliant opportunity for emerging and established artists alike.

Exciting times for theatre in North Devon. Give the Theatre Workhouse page a follow to keep up with performances, Scratch Nights and future opportunities to get involved.

Theatre Workhouse has received an Arts Council England grant to bring live theatre to venues across Barnstaple

What a week with the O’Driscoll Collective in North Devon.

From workshops with prep and senior students at West Buckland School, to a session with nearly 40 students at Braunton Academy, a primary school workshop in Berrynarbor and an adult workshop in Braunton, the company brought energy, creativity and inspiration wherever they went. In between it all they squeezed in rehearsals ahead of an incredible packed performance in a beautiful barn in Berrynarbor on Friday night.

They even stayed on for a very special top secret community project on Saturday, working together in partnership with members from our local networks…more on that soon. Watch this space 👀

Huge thanks to all the teachers and staff who welcomed the company into their schools and sessions, and to Richard, Be and Salah for sharing their amazing barn and making everyone feel so welcome. Thanks too to our brilliant Berrynarbor promoter Fenella, Karen and the team at Berrynarbor Community Shop, Howaboutdave photography, The Dance Factory, Switchframe, Rebecca Varley Dance School and Rural Touring Dance Initiative for helping make the week happen.

And of course a huge thank you to the brilliant O’Driscoll Collective for bringing such generosity, talent and joy to every single moment of the week.

Busy, creative, inspiring and unforgettable.
