Have had a long conversation with mental health - relating to deafness this afternoon.
Just wanted to re-interate the importance of telling people who book communication support for you if you are deaf - or if you book it yourself to understand there are choices...
Not just BSL / English interpretation, but others as well, like Lipspeaking with sign for SSE.
It is really important to note that if you are asking for Sign supported English, it is NOT in the scope of the work provided by a BSL/ English interpreter, they are NOT trained for it. If a BSL/English Interpreter tells you that they can provide SSE, they are not adhering to the code of conduct of the NRCPD.
Beware, you will not be covered if you want to make a complaint about the professional, and should the professional claim to be able to do it, they are breaking their own code and should be reported to the NRCPD.
I ask everyone here who is deaf, and who are on my friends list to share this, please, we will not get a better, more inclusive service suited to our needs until we do.
Further down in the comments, I have added the list of different communication support available. Should there not be one suitable for you, then by all means please contact Signature Deaf or feel free to PM me- they need to know. The more we explain our needs, the better our future lives will be.
