Balerno Baby and Toddler Group Our primary aim is to provide a fun, safe and calm environment for babies and young children to explore, play and socialise with other young children.

The Balerno Parent and Toddler Group is a well established parent lead group within the local community, welcoming generations of toddlers and their carers.

rs the opportunity to meet new people, establish friendships and to talk with others about the joys and anxieties of looking after young children. The weekly sessions generally involve free play, crafts, snacks and song time. In addition the group organises fun and social activities for both the children and the grown-ups. Our group is for young children 0-5 years of age and their carers (parents, grandparents and childminders). We meet each Thursday morning during school term time between 9.30-11.30. Attending the group costs £2 per session, which included snacks and drinks for child(ren) and accompanying adult. These fees pay the rental of the hall, purchase of new toys, craft supplies, snacks, drinks and parties.

IT’S TIME FOR THE 2026 BALERNO SCARECROW TRAIL!

It’s time to get your thinking caps on for this year’s Balerno Scarecrow Trail.

Rules and dates below:

• You must be a resident of Balerno to enter – and the Scarecrow(s) must be on display at an address in Balerno.

• There are two categories for Scarecrows this year: Community Organisation/Business entry and private//individual entrants. There are prizes for each category.

• If you’re still looking for straw, organisers Balerno Village Trust (BVT) may still have some left after this month’s Farmers’ market and the Balerno Gala: email [email protected].

• Deadline for entries is 5pm on Thursday 4 June 2026.

• Maps of the sites for Scarecrows will be available online from Friday 5 June; paper copies will be available from the Mill Cafe, Main Street.

• Scarecrows have to be outside ready for folk to go scarecrow-hunting by noon on Saturday 6 June. BVT will be taking photographs for judging on the Saturday after 1pm. We ask that you leave your scarecrow out for at least two days, though you can of course leave your scarecrow out for longer if you wish!

• Photographs of the individual scarecrow entries will be posted on the Balerno Farmers Market and Balerno Village Trust pages and also BVT’s website: https://balernovt.org.uk/.

• Online votes will be accepted from Monday 8 June until noon on Saturday 13 June. Voting slips will also be available from The Mill Cafe and the Village Trust stall at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday 13 June (until noon). You can also register your vote by “liking” the scarecrow of your choice on Facebook, using the voting slips or by emailing your vote to: [email protected].

• The winners will be announced at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday 13 June at 12.30pm. Winner and runners up must consent to their name and winning scarecrow photos being made public on social media (and in C&B News).

It is voting day tomorrow and this is being held in the area that the mill cafe runs from. This means the cafe will be closed tomorrow but Ogston Hall remains open for our group.
