🎩 HATS OFF TO THOMAS & WILLIAM
The bowler hat is a familiar sight at Orange parades, particularly on the Twelfth in Northern Ireland, but have you ever wondered where it came from?

First created in 1849 by London hat makers Thomas and William Bowler, the hat was designed to protect gamekeepers from low-hanging branches and stay firmly on the wearer's head. More than 175 years later, it remains one of the most recognisable items associated with Orange culture.

From Victorian Britain and the American Wild West to the streets of Belfast each 12th July, the bowler hat has a remarkable history.

Read more in this week's article as we look at the origins of an enduring parade tradition. πŸ‘‡

πŸ”Ά Statement from the County Grand Lodge of Ayrshire, Renfrewshire & Argyll πŸ”·

The County Grand Lodge of Ayrshire, Renfrewshire & Argyll expresses its deep disappointment and disgust following the act of vandalism and hate crime carried out at Patna Orange Hall, where offensive graffiti has been spray-painted on the building.

Places such as Orange Halls are not simply buildings β€” they are centres of community, heritage, charity and fellowship for many people across Ayrshire and beyond. Generations of families have passed through their doors for over 160 years, contributing positively to their local communities.

To see such an attack on one of our Halls is deeply upsetting to the members of the Lodge and the wider Orange family.

We want to make it absolutely clear that hatred, vandalism and intimidation have no place in our society. Disagreements should always be expressed through respectful dialogue, never through criminal damage or acts intended to cause division.

We stand firmly with the members of Patna Orange Hall and offer them our full support as they deal with the aftermath of this incident.

Incidents like this will not weaken the bonds of our community. If anything, they strengthen our resolve to continue promoting the principles of faith, charity, loyalty and community service that our Institution represents.

We hope those responsible are identified and held accountable.

Are you an active member,
The kind that would be missed,
Or do you foolishly think,
Your name's already on the list,

Do you attend the meetings,
And mingle with the crowd,
Or do you stay at home,
With your head up in the clouds,

Do you take an active part,
To help the club along,
Or are you just satisfied to be,
The kind to just belong,

Do you ever go visit,
A member who is sick,
Or leave the work for just a few,
To talk about the clique,

We have quite a job to do,
That means success if done,
And it can be accomplished,
With the help of everyone,

So attend the meetings regularly,
Help and care with all your heart,
Don't just be a member,
Take an active part,

Think this over my brothers and sisters,
Are we right or are we wrong,
Are you an active member,
Or do you just belong?
