As the end of the year fast approaches, we thought we’d take a bit of time to look back on some key activity that’s taken place in Awre over the last few months. First up, is footpaths.
We know that the Severn Way and its footpaths around the edge of the Awre peninsula are an important part of the local landscape. And a key focus area for us has been understanding how and in which ways we can maintain, and improve, footpaths as part of our saltmarsh restoration works. 🥾
We've had some great discussions with many of you, at various community drop-ins, as well as on some of our walk and talk events around the peninsula, about the Severn Way and its interconnected footpaths.
We've also had a chance to meet with the Gloucestershire Local Access forum as well as the Public Right of Way team at Gloucestershire County Council.
We know the current footpath around the peninsula is at serious risk of being washed away, due to the failing flood defences and the power of the tides. And while a bridge across the breach has been suggested, there’s a number of reasons we don’t feel this is the right option.
Firstly, it's very possible that existing flood defences will eventually fail in more than one place, making access to a bridge from one or both sides impossible. And secondly, creating a bridge robust enough to withstand the power of the estuary, would cause significant disturbance to the community.
We’re very keen to work with and restore natural processes – not bring more concrete and steel into the landscape. 🌿
We are continuing to look at new routes to improve access to the Awre peninsula for the community. Any new route we propose will connect the north and south side of the peninsula, following the tow of the hillside and providing views across the site to the estuary.
We know that changes to footpaths you know and love, including temporary diversions, or the creation of new routes, can be a daunting prospect. But as we move ahead into the New Year, we’ll continue to talk to you about the ways we can best do this to benefit you, while protecting the surrounding wildlife. 🦉
