Thanks to everyone who joined us on 23 April for our most recent drop-in event at Awre village Hall.

We presented updates, information and design options for residents on aspects of the future reserve including access, parking, viewpoints and signage, and the putcher hut.

For residents who missed the event but would like to register their opinions on the design there are still opportunities to have your say.

Please use the links below to access the information boards and worksheet from our most recent event.

If you need support in completing a worksheet, wish to return a physical copy or would like to discuss any aspect of our work before doing so, please don’t hesitate to email us on [email protected].

Gloucestershire County Council have informed us today that they plan to make improvements to the lower section of the track on Church Lane, starting work early next week.

This work will be from the pond at the bottom of the hill, along the flat section to the corner by the silage clamp, with a pipe being installed under the track to divert standing water into the nearby pond.

Their contractor will remove the top layer, fill any ruts with stone and compact the surface. GCC have said that the area will remain passable throughout the works, which are expected to take no more than two days.

For more details on these works please see today’s community bulletin or contact us directly on [email protected]

As the end of the year fast approaches, we thought we’d take a bit of time to look back on some key activity that’s taken place in Awre over the last few months. First up, is footpaths.

We know that the Severn Way and its footpaths around the edge of the Awre peninsula are an important part of the local landscape. And a key focus area for us has been understanding how and in which ways we can maintain, and improve, footpaths as part of our saltmarsh restoration works. 🥾

We've had some great discussions with many of you, at various community drop-ins, as well as on some of our walk and talk events around the peninsula, about the Severn Way and its interconnected footpaths.

We've also had a chance to meet with the Gloucestershire Local Access forum as well as the Public Right of Way team at Gloucestershire County Council.

We know the current footpath around the peninsula is at serious risk of being washed away, due to the failing flood defences and the power of the tides. And while a bridge across the breach has been suggested, there’s a number of reasons we don’t feel this is the right option.

Firstly, it's very possible that existing flood defences will eventually fail in more than one place, making access to a bridge from one or both sides impossible. And secondly, creating a bridge robust enough to withstand the power of the estuary, would cause significant disturbance to the community.

We’re very keen to work with and restore natural processes – not bring more concrete and steel into the landscape. 🌿

We are continuing to look at new routes to improve access to the Awre peninsula for the community. Any new route we propose will connect the north and south side of the peninsula, following the tow of the hillside and providing views across the site to the estuary.

We know that changes to footpaths you know and love, including temporary diversions, or the creation of new routes, can be a daunting prospect. But as we move ahead into the New Year, we’ll continue to talk to you about the ways we can best do this to benefit you, while protecting the surrounding wildlife. 🦉

Just let us know if you’d like to join, by emailing [email protected].

We will also be running a drop-in 3pm until 7pm on the same day at Awre Village Hall, where you can put your questions about the project to us in person.

There are two opportunities to discuss WWT’s work at Awre coming up on 9 October.

WWT staff will be leading a walk starting at 8:45am from the village hall to coincide with a high tide on the estuary.

This will be an opportunity for the community and WWT to discuss progress on our project while enjoying the spectacle of the river rising. To sign up to this please email [email protected] with how many people you would like to bring.

You can also join us from 3pm – 7pm at Awre village hall on 9 October for one of our regular drop-in events to discuss progress on the project and ask us your questions face to face.

Please be advised that a large ash tree has fallen down, and is blocking access on a public footbridge on the peninsula. Please see the attached map for the exact location.

We’ve notified the local Public Right of Way Officer at Gloucestershire County Council, and will be clearing the tree from the route this week.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused in the meantime, and appreciate your understanding.
