Atherstone Against Water Transfer

Atherstone Against Water Transfer We are an informal group of residents who have grave concerns about the Grand Union Canal Transfer Scheme.

We are working with businesses and councillors to raise awareness of the scheme and its potential impact upon the town and wider district.

I have been in contact with a staff member of the GUCTS. I have been assured that the lighting around the break pressure tank at 21 Oaks will not be on all night (unless someone is working there) but will be subject to PIRs. Also, there will be screening from both roads. It's nice to have something positive to report.

It's a beautiful sunny day so why not join us at The Outwoods at 10.30 this morning to enjoy nature & record what you see, bring a picnic too πŸ˜ƒ

Meeting place is the small carpark part way up the golf course driveway but don't worry if you arrive later, just look for the people taking photos of nature & come and speak to us

*We will be using the iNaturalist app to record wildlife in the Outwoods.
*You can download the app for free on a smart phone.
*Once in the app please search under the projects tab for The Outwoods.
*Then please "join" the project.
*This means we will be able to collate and check all our findings.
*we can help you with all the above to get you started

We hope to record for around an hour to ninety minutes.
If you'd like to stay after we have finished recording, we plan to picnic up on the flat top so bring a blanket and some food to enjoy while chatting. πŸ˜ƒ

The photo is an artist impression of the break pressure tank on the corner of 21 Oaks and Coleshill Road. Each side is about 23m and about 6m high. For security and the safety of those working after dark it's going to be lit from dusk until dawn. Could it not be screened by trees from both roads? Will they be the special lights to help protect our nocturnal animals? Has there been a bat survey in the woods just below the tank? Still so many questions to be answered.

The photo was sent in by one of our followers. We have also been told that Severn Trent are not keeping to the publicly agreed times for road closures between Baxterley and Hurley. Can we really trust our utility companies?

Thanks for your response to our bird survey in the woodland. We need your help with a bat survey. The first part is known as a Premlinary Roost Survey where trees/buildings are inspected for signs of bats roosting - droppings, urine stains, feeding remains. This will give us locations where we can place a passive acoustic monitoring device from the British Bat Survey. The fight goes on!
Thanks to James Wainscott for the picture.

Do you visit the local woods? Then your help is needed. Birds in green spaces is an app where you can log all birds you see or hear, I asked them to add The Outwoods as an official area to survey & it's now on. Please download the app & start logging the birds, the more people who do this the better the information. I also recommend the Merlin app which tells you what birds are singing as you can log all these too. Tell us how you get on πŸ˜ƒ

The GUCTS documents tell us that the land closer to the quarry was too unstable to take a pipeline. A witness who worked for the quarry at the time the extension was being made distinctly remembers the pipeline being moved from the edge of the old quarry to the edge of the new one so if Severn Trent already has a pipeline in the area, why can't there be a second one?
