Ashton Old Baths

Ashton Old Baths Welcome to Ashton Old Baths – a historic space, reinvented for a new generation of visionaries. Ashton Old Baths was built in 1870 in the Italianate style.

Ashton Old Baths, an iconic Greater Manchester landmark, has sat empty for 40 years. Since 2014 the building has undergone extensive renovation to breathe life back into it, with the vision that it will become a thriving hub for small and medium digital, creative and media businesses. The Baths will be open to customers on the 22nd May 2017, please get in contact to arrange a visit. It functioned

as a swimming pool until 1975. It lay derelict until 2013 when Tameside Council and Place First (local property developer) secured funding from the European Regional Development Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund to restore and renovate the building. The new structure has been designed to minimise physical impacts on the building’s structure, and to preserve the spatial quality of the main bathing hall. At ground floor level, a glazed lightweight box offers up views of and through the main hall; the box is broken down into a series of rooms that can be used by both occupiers as office space and meeting rooms. There is also a roof terrace which runs along the entire length of the building. David Smith-Milne, managing director of PlaceFirst, said:

“The transformation of Ashton Old Baths from derelict landmark to 21st century workspace has been an amazing journey for all involved. Considering we only bought the building just under two years ago, to get such an innovative solution on programme and within budget is testament to the passion and commitment of everyone who has worked on the project.”

C'mon England!!!! 🦁🦁🦁

AOB is well and truly in the World Cup spirit ⚽ proudly supporting our England team as they kick off their first match of the tournament tonight!

A friend of the Centre has kindly created a beautiful 'England' duck for us, so of course we took her on a little tour around the Centre for a photoshoot with our bunting!

C'mon England 🦁🦁🦁

We’d like to say a big thank you to the very talented Lee from SPL Fire Safety Ltd - Fire Engineering & Fire Safety Management who has kindly made a stain glass Manchester Bee, especially for AOB. 🐝

Lee made one similar for his home to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack, and we commented on how lovely this was, so he generously took the time to make another one for the Centre.

Absolutly stunning 💗

At AOB we use any excuse to celebrate, and today it’s National Biscuit Day - 29th May,

What is National Biscuit Day? 🍪
National Biscuit Day is celebrated on 29th May to honour the rich history and cultural significance of the humble biscuit. It is a day to appreciate biscuits as a staple food that originated as an essential, long-lasting source of sustenance for ancient civilizations and sailors.

And the age-old question – is a Jaffa cake, a cake or a biscuit? 👀

In a famous 1991 UK court case, manufacturer McVitie's successfully proved it is a....
CAKE
The distinction is crucial for tax laws; in the UK, cakes are zero-rated for VAT, whereas chocolate-covered biscuits are subject to standard tax rates. Here is how the judge and the public view the treats:
Why it is a cake (Legally)
The Stale Test: The primary argument in court was that biscuits go soft when they go stale, whereas cakes go hard. When a Jaffa Cake is left exposed to the air, it hardens. The Sponge Base: The base of a Jaffa Cake is a thin, aerated sponge mixture rather than traditional biscuit dough.

Today we learnt some interesting facts whilst sampling some lovely biscuits - what a great day 😁

Today we say good bye to Elicia Simmons who is leaving one of the businesses in the Centre. Although Elicia doesn't work directly with the AOB team she, like everyone here at AOB, is part of a big family and we are going to miss her so much!

As a thoughtful parting gift, Elicia gave each of us a lovely novelty duck - such a fun and personal touch! She chose them so well, perfectly capturing our individual personalities in the simplest and cutest way!

Wishing you all the very best, Elicia!
You’ll always be part of the AOB family 💖

WORKERS from companies based at Ashton Old Baths swapped desks for litter pickers as they joined forces to help clean up part of Ashton-under-Lyne.

Staff from businesses based in Ashton Old Baths took part in a litter pick to tidy up their local area.

The team cleaned up the St Peter’s area of Ashton-under-Lyne, where the digital business hub is based, on 30 April. They worked with Tameside Council’s Portland Basin Litter Hub, who loaned equipment and hi-vis jackets.

The Ashton Old Baths residents worked together to give back to the community during their lunch break, strengthening their sense of unity and supporting each other. The initiative allowed them to take pride in their surroundings and was a reminder of what can be achieved by pulling together.

There are free litter hubs in community spaces across Tameside’s towns, which anyone can visit and get involved with.

Individuals or groups can book free equipment via a local hub, including hi-vis jackets, litter pickers, and black bags. The hub will then arrange for your rubbish to be disposed of appropriately.

The litter hubs support the upkeep of the borough and protect the environment, aiming to develop civic pride and involve the whole community in helping to keep Tameside litter-free.

Tameside Council’s Strategic Director of Housing, Environment & Estates, Julian Jackson said: “It’s incredible to see the local business community working with us to tidy and take care of local areas.

“Thank you to the Ashton Old Baths team for your hard work in ensuring we can be proud of where we live.

“I really encourage other businesses, community groups, and individuals to get on board and help us look after our neighbourhoods. Our street cleaning teams work hard every day, but we can all play a part in keeping our streets free from litter.”

The Our Streets campaign highlights that keeping our neighbourhoods clean, safe, and welcoming is a shared responsibility.
