Public meeting all welcome

After the wettest winter on record in 2025 and the sewer flooding emergency that saw the return of tankers to our villages, Southern Water are holding a open community event to explain what happened, what they have learnt from the emergency and what they have been doing to prepare for this winter.

The session will be held at Thruxton Memorial Hall, Village Street, Thruxton, Andover SP11 8LZ between 18:30 and 20:30 on Thursday 22 October.

Morning all,

A reminder that the village road will be closed on a rolling basis during working hours from this weekend until 3rd November as per the yellow lines below. Reasonable access to properties is to be allowed at all times.

If possible, please use the Clanville road and Biddesden Lane from Ludgershall for access to the villages during this period, and try and avoid Privet Lane if you can for obvious reasons.

The work is on schedule to complete on time, thank goodness, and we should be free of contractors in the next month. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation! Please pass the message on.

Cllr Phil Lashbrook's update on the withdrawal of Hampshire's Local Government Review process.
https://www.futurehampshire.gov.uk/ was set up by the Borough, Town and County councils to keep us informed about devolution timelines and may be worth visiting occasionally for any updates on a new way forward.
Since the meeting, a Full Planning Application for 400 dwellings at Ludgershall has been submitted by Bloor Homes under reference 26/01935/FULLN. The deadline for comments is this Friday, 9th October.

An Update on The Walnut Tree

Many of you will have noticed that The Walnut Tree is now closed and the boards have gone up. We know this has understandably prompted a few questions and concerns, so we wanted to share the latest update with the community.
The good news is that, hopefully, it won’t be closed for too long.

The sale is progressing and we understand that the new owners are full steam ahead with their plans for The Walnut Tree.
There may still be a few days or weeks where we simply have to sit tight while everything goes through, but all the signs are positive.
The Walnut Tree has been at the heart of our community for many years, and we know just how much it means to so many people. After everything that has been done to help secure its future, it’s really encouraging to have reached this point.
For now, it’s a case of being patient for just a little longer – and hopefully it won’t be too long before we see the doors of The Walnut Tree open once again.

We’ll continue to share updates with the community as soon as we’re able to.

Note that the proposal shows a significant increase compared with that for customers of the other water companies - see Table 3 at the link. The Parish Council has commented that we hope our increased contributions will encourage the company to ensure we are more resilient to future failures of the sewer system, and also to emerging drought conditions. Much as we and Southern Water hope it will be a success, the current pipe sealing work is not guaranteed to completely solve the past problems, based on the experience of a neighbouring parish.

Ofwat is currently consulting on its draft decision on £749 million of additional funding for Southern Water to deliver new infrastructure and improvements to existing infrastructure.

Ofwat estimates that the part funded through bills during the current five-year period could add an average of £43 in 2027-28 and £37 in 2029-30, although actual bills will also be affected by inflation and other regulatory adjustments.

The funding would be tied to defined projects and delivery commitments, with money returned to customers where additional investment is not required or specified projects are not delivered.

Please stay away from the Red Chestnut tree at the bottom of Primrose Hill for the time being until the tree surgeon has checked it, especially while the wind is blowing as it is.

A large portion of the trunk was blown down this morning and the inside of what remains standing looks very unhealthy.
