Young carers:
Young carers are first and foremost young people, with all the issues, hopes, dreams, problems, and stresses that all young people have. The term young carer should be taken to include children and young people under 18 who provide regular or on-going care and emotional support to a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances. A young carer become
s vulnerable when the level of care giving and responsibility to the person in need of care becomes excessive or inappropriate for that child, risk impacting on his or her emotional, physical well-being or educational achievement and life chances. A child whose father has an alcohol problem and needs help to clean the home, manage bills and cook meals is a young carer. A child who helps their brother with autism as their mother has a physical disability is a young carer. The caring responsibilities might be:
* Personal care - e.g. washing, toileting
* Supporting in the home - e.g. cooking, cleaning, washing
* Responsibilities - e.g. ensuring medication is taken
* Emotional care - e.g. keeping an eye on someone. How can I refer someone to Andover Young Carers?
