What are we campaigning for?
The reopening of Square Chapel as a financially sustainable, vibrant and inclusive centre for arts and culture, with good community links and outreach, providing work opportunities for professional artists and creatives.
Who are we?
A large number of people, passionate about the arts, sad and angry at the loss of this unique venue, local organisations keen to return to the space which best suits their activities, many individuals missing the socialising they used to enjoy at Square Chapel.
What is the current situation?
It is an impasse. Square Chapel CIC, based in Wigan, owns the freehold of the building but closed it in February. Arts Council England has a charge on the building arising from past capital funding. Temporarily the centre is let as green rooms for the Piece Hall concert series until the end of September.
Apparently eight organisations have expressed interest in taking over the building. Whoever takes it on, the voices of Calderdale people must be heard over the future of the centre.
What are we doing?
The Save Square Chapel campaign is lobbying Calderdale Council, Arts Council England and others for the return of OUR Square Chapel. Please join us.
