PUBLIC MARINE MAMMAL SURVEY - open to all!

Join us for our monthly public land watch at Porth Cwyfan on Sunday 25th October, 10am - 1pm! You are welcome to join for the full 3 hour survey or whenever within that time frame.

Please note that this event is weather dependent, any changes to times or cancellations will be posted on our social media. If you have any questions feel free to contact us.

🦅 Species Spotlight - White-tailed Sea Eagle 🦅

With a wingspan of up to 8 feet this is the UK’s largest bird of prey! Once extinct in the UK, the white tailed eagle has been making a comeback across the country since 1975, where they began again on the Isle of Rum in the Hebrides.
They are unmistakably large, with a white fan tail and large yellow hooked bill. In the UK, they can be seen coastally around southern England, the Isle of Wight and the Hebrides.

˖𓇼🌊⋆🐚🫧 Species Spotlight / Sbotolau Rhywogaeth ˖𓇼🌊⋆🐚🫧

˖𓇼🌊 Beadlet Anemone (Actinia equina)
These small, colourful anemones are often spotted as red blobs. They are found on hard rocks and substrates on rocky shores across Western Europe.
When the tide comes in they reveal up to 192 retractable tentacles they use to catch passing prey such as crabs and small fish.
Being highly territorial and aggressive, they fight over space with other anemones using “acrorhagi”, which are bright blue beads full of stinging cells found just beneath their tentacles.
You can find many dark red, orange and even green beadlet anemones locally on Anglesey!

We have a boat trip out of Amlwch Port TODAY on Sunday 3rd October, 15:00 - 18:30. There are 3 spaces left!!
This is a free wildlife watching boat trip, open to our volunteers and community members who may not otherwise get the chance to be on the water.

As always, weather can be unpredictable, so I will keep an eye on the forecast and alert you if anything changes. The booking link will ask for a £5 payment as a deposit, which can be returned on the day.
Please be at the port for 2:45 to board the boat in time!

🐦‍⬛ Species Spotlight! (S**g) 🐦‍⬛

Ubiquitous around the UK coastline, S**gs are a jet black seabird, with a long serpentine neck and striking emerald eyes. Not to be confused with their larger cousins, Cormorants, shags have a yellow patch on their face and fly with more of a ‘pot belly’. Here, you can also see the nictitating membrane! A special see-through ‘third eyelid’ that protects the eyes as they dive for prey!
