This isn't an evening of lectures about energy.

It's a film.

And a very good one.

POWER STATION follows two people who decide to try something extraordinary: turning their London street into an energy-generating community.

It's a story about neighbours, money, ambition, setbacks, creativity and what happens when people start talking to one another about what might be possible.

uumm interesting… and perhaps one for the summer of 2027! ☀️

What could happen if a community decided to do something about energy together?

On Thursday 19 November, Energy Alton is bringing something a little different to the Alton Assembly Rooms.

We're screening POWER STATION, an inspiring film about two people who set out to transform their street in Walthamstow into a solar-powered community.

It's funny, warm-hearted and full of the messy reality of trying to turn a big idea into something practical.

And afterwards we'll bring the conversation closer to home, sharing what's happening here in Alton, including free home energy surveys, ways to improve our homes, solar opportunities and other practical ideas.

Come for the film. Stay for the conversation.

☀️ Thinking about plug-in solar? There’s one important step you shouldn’t forget.

Plug-in solar is now legal in Great Britain but if you install a system, you also need to register it.

A new service, makes it easy for consumers to register their installation.

Why does this matter? Registration helps the electricity network keep track of these small solar systems as more households start generating their own power.

👉 If you’re considering plug-in solar, make sure you check the rules and register your installation.

We’ve updated our Plug-in Solar FAQ with the latest information:

☀️ No roof? You could still have solar!

A change in the rules means approved plug-in solar systems can now be connected to a standard household socket, making solar a possible option for more homes.

They could be particularly useful if you live in a flat, have a balcony, or can’t install traditional rooftop solar.

Systems are expected to cost around £300–£600, with potential savings of around £95–£155 a year if you’re able to use the electricity while it’s being generated.

But before you rush out and buy one, there are a few important things to check.

👉 We’ve put together a simple Plug-in Solar FAQ to explain how it works, what to look out for and whether it could be right for you.

From 27 August 2026, new UK regulations will allow approved plug-in solar systems to be connected using a standard household socket, providing an easier way to install solar at home.

🌡️ Did you know a heat pump can keep your home cool too? Watch this recorded video to find out more.

When we talk about heat pumps, we usually think about keeping warm in winter. But air-to-air heat pumps can do both - heating in winter and cooling in summer. ☀️❄️

That could make them an interesting option as our summers get warmer, particularly for flats, smaller homes and open-plan spaces.

An interesting area of home energy. Watch this NESTA webinar here to find out more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmEdQvT-IxI&t=16s

As UK summers grow hotter and extreme weather becomes more frequent...
