General information

Sandpiper was founded in memory of Sandy Dickson who tragically drowned aged 14 years. The Trust aims to improve pre-hospital care in rural and remote areas in Scotland by providing doctors, nurses and paramedics with a Sandpiper bag that includes live-saving medical equipment, which enables them to respond to accidents or sudden illnesses. Ambulances aim to respond to an emergency in 8 minutes but this is not always possible especially in rural Scotland. Many of Scotland's islands do not even have ambulances, or doctors. These kits cost over £1000 each and include more than 50 essential general medical and paediatric items. We have provided 105 emergency medical Sandpiper Bags for responders on the Islands and 854 to doctors, nurses or paramedics on the mainland, enabling them to respond to emergencies in their communities. Patients have been treated the length and breadth of the country, whether it has been a resuscitation on the pavement in St Andrews or in Morayshire, or a Road Traffic Accident on the A9 or the A90. More lives than we imagined could have been saved, have been saved.
