A huge thank to Blaenau Gwent CBC for showcasing the Institute's engaging African culture workshops for local children and young people, exploring traditions from Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Ghana through food, art and music. The project helped promote inclusion, understanding and stronger community connections in a welcoming environment.
Thank you so much for supporting us with funding from the Gwent Community Cohesion Grant.
Community groups and schools across Blaenau Gwent are being encouraged to apply for the next round of the Gwent Community Cohesion Grant, which funds projects that bring people together, and promote inclusion.
Up to £2,000 is available to support projects that help strengthen community connections, celebrate diversity and create opportunities for people who might not ordinarily come together to meet and share experiences.
The grant helped Llanhilleth Miners’ Institute deliver an inspiring programme of African culture workshops for children and young people. Those taking part explored the cultures and traditions of Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Ghana, cooking Nigerian inspired Jollof Rice and creating Djembe drums, tribal masks and safari-themed artwork.
The children and young people were supported to ask questions, share their own traditions and learn about cultures different from their own in a safe and welcoming space. The project played an important role in strengthening understanding and inclusion in a community that has welcomed more families from African countries in recent years.
As a Marmot Council we’re committed to connected communities, and through our new way of working with communities through The Blaenau Gwent Deal, fully support community led ideas that strengthen belonging and promote inclusion for everyone.
